What is a caption?

Captioners are professionals who create text versions of spoken words and other audio elements for videos, television programs, live events, or online content. Their work helps make multimedia accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as those watching in sound-sensitive environments. Captioners may work in real-time, such as during live broadcasts, or offline, preparing captions for pre-recorded material. They must have strong listening skills, fast and accurate typing abilities, and attention to detail. The role may involve using specialized software and adhering to specific guidelines for clarity and timing.

What are some common challenges captioners face when transcribing live events, and how can they overcome them?

Captioners working on live events often encounter challenges such as fast-paced dialogue, multiple speakers talking at once, and dealing with accents or unclear audio. To manage these situations, it's important to develop strong listening skills, become familiar with relevant terminology, and use specialized captioning software efficiently. Collaborating closely with event coordinators and technical staff can also help ensure clear audio feeds and minimize potential disruptions during live transcription.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a captioner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Captioner, you need excellent listening skills, fast and accurate typing abilities, and a strong command of grammar and spelling, often supported by relevant training or coursework. Familiarity with captioning software such as CaptionMaker, stenography equipment, and knowledge of accessibility standards like FCC or ADA is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and the ability to work under tight deadlines are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure that captions are clear, timely, and accessible, which is critical for supporting individuals with hearing impairments and enhancing overall content accessibility.

What is the difference between Caption vs Video Editor?

AspectCaptionVideo Editor
Required SkillsTyping, language proficiency, attention to detailVideo editing, software proficiency, creativity

Both roles are essential in media production but require different skill sets and tools. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers find the right fit in the media industry.

Do caption jobs still exist?

Yes, caption jobs still exist and involve creating or editing text descriptions for videos, TV shows, and movies to improve accessibility. These roles often require strong language skills and familiarity with captioning software, and they can be found in media companies, transcription services, and remote work platforms.

How do I become a captioner?

To become a captioner, you typically need strong typing skills, proficiency in captioning software, and a good understanding of grammar and punctuation. Many employers require a high school diploma or equivalent, and some may prefer certification or training in captioning or related fields. Gaining experience through practice or internships can also improve job prospects.

THE RIGHT-HAND ROLE YOU DIDN'T KNOW EXISTED
Cambria Smith Insurance & Financial Services | Mapleton, UT
Full-Time | $18-22/hr DOE | In-Person | No License Required
ABOUT THIS ROLE
Cambria Smith Insurance & Financial Services is a thriving State Farm agency in Mapleton, Utah serving families across Utah Valley. Our agency owner, Cambria, is also building a personal brand, growing a social media presence, and running a full household - and she needs a trusted right-hand person to help her do all of it at the highest level.
This is not a traditional office job. It's a rare, varied, and genuinely meaningful role that spans professional office support, home management, social media coordination, and client appointment setting. If you love wearing multiple hats, thrive on organization, and want to be part of building something real - this is your role.
No insurance license is required. What IS required is exceptional organization, a warm and professional personality, discretion, and a genuine desire to make someone else's vision run beautifully.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
OFFICE & ADMIN
- Manage Cambria's calendar and protect her time
- Answer and screen incoming calls
- Handle email triage - respond, delegate, and organize
- Coordinate between team members so Cambria isn't the hub
- Organize QuickBooks and personal financial admin
- Prepare meeting materials and follow-ups
- Keep office systems running smoothly
HOME MANAGEMENT
- Weekly grocery shopping and pantry management
- Laundry - wash, fold, and put away
- Occasional meal prep and planning support
- Keep the home organized and running smoothly
- Local errands (Mapleton/Spanish Fork area)
- Coordinate home vendors and appointments
- Light housekeeping and tidying as needed
SOCIAL MEDIA (Two accounts - State Farm + personal lifestyle brand)
- Collaborate with Cambria to create content ideas
- Write and design posts for Instagram and TikTok
- Schedule and publish content consistently
- Manage engagement - respond to comments and DMs
- Track what's performing and report weekly
- Help maintain brand consistency across both accounts
- Support newsletter and email list content
APPOINTMENT SETTING (State Farm clients + personal brand)
- Schedule and confirm client policy reviews
- Outreach to existing book of business clients
- Coordinate and confirm new client appointments
- Book brand partnership and collaboration calls
- Manage follow-up sequences after appointments
- Keep the calendar full and organized
- Track appointments and outcomes in CRM
A DAY IN YOUR LIFE
Here's what a typical Monday might look like:
8:00 AM - Triage Cambria's email and flag anything urgent before she's in the office
9:00 AM - Call existing clients to schedule annual policy reviews
10:30 AM - Draft and schedule this week's Instagram posts for both accounts
12:00 PM - Grocery order and put away at home
1:00 PM - Respond to Instagram comments and DMs on both accounts
2:00 PM - Prep materials for tomorrow's client appointments
3:00 PM - Laundry and light tidying while doing phone follow-up calls
4:00 PM - Update Cambria's calendar and send her a daily wrap-up summary
No two days look exactly the same - and that's the point.
WHO YOU ARE
You are obsessively organized. You have systems for everything. Nothing slips through. You anticipate before you're asked.
You are proactive by nature. You see what needs doing and do it without waiting to be told. You're three steps ahead.
You are creatively capable. You can write a compelling caption, design a simple graphic, and understand what looks good on social media.
You are a confident communicator. On the phone, in a DM, or in person - you're warm, professional, and people enjoy talking to you.
You are trustworthy and discreet. You'll have access to someone's home, finances, and business. Confidentiality is a core value, not a policy.
You are growth-minded. You want to learn and grow with a business. You're not looking for a job - you're looking for a place to build.
THIS ROLE IS NOT A FIT IF YOU:
- Prefer a predictable, single-focus job where every day looks the same
- Are uncomfortable toggling between professional tasks and home tasks
- Need heavy supervision or struggle to take initiative independently
- Are not comfortable making outbound phone calls to clients
- Have no interest in social media or content creation
- Are looking for something temporary - this is a long-term, trust-based role
