What is a caption?

Captioners are professionals who create text versions of spoken words and other audio elements for videos, television programs, live events, or online content. Their work helps make multimedia accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as those watching in sound-sensitive environments. Captioners may work in real-time, such as during live broadcasts, or offline, preparing captions for pre-recorded material. They must have strong listening skills, fast and accurate typing abilities, and attention to detail. The role may involve using specialized software and adhering to specific guidelines for clarity and timing.

What are some common challenges captioners face when transcribing live events, and how can they overcome them?

Captioners working on live events often encounter challenges such as fast-paced dialogue, multiple speakers talking at once, and dealing with accents or unclear audio. To manage these situations, it's important to develop strong listening skills, become familiar with relevant terminology, and use specialized captioning software efficiently. Collaborating closely with event coordinators and technical staff can also help ensure clear audio feeds and minimize potential disruptions during live transcription.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a captioner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Captioner, you need excellent listening skills, fast and accurate typing abilities, and a strong command of grammar and spelling, often supported by relevant training or coursework. Familiarity with captioning software such as CaptionMaker, stenography equipment, and knowledge of accessibility standards like FCC or ADA is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and the ability to work under tight deadlines are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure that captions are clear, timely, and accessible, which is critical for supporting individuals with hearing impairments and enhancing overall content accessibility.

What is the difference between Caption vs Video Editor?

Both roles are essential in media production but require different skill sets and tools. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers find the right fit in the media industry.

Do caption jobs still exist?

Yes, caption jobs still exist and involve creating or editing text descriptions for videos, TV shows, and movies to improve accessibility. These roles often require strong language skills and familiarity with captioning software, and they can be found in media companies, transcription services, and remote work platforms.

How do I become a captioner?

To become a captioner, you typically need strong typing skills, proficiency in captioning software, and a good understanding of grammar and punctuation. Many employers require a high school diploma or equivalent, and some may prefer certification or training in captioning or related fields. As a premier beauty company, we specialize in smart, safe, and innovative beauty tools that empower our customers to look and feel their best. We are a fast-paced team that thrives on social culture, high-end aesthetics, and a commitment to quality.

Core Responsibilities

  • Social Media & Brand Engagement
    • Community & Brand Outreach: Proactively engage, comment, and banter with target brands, influencers, press, and followers on TikTok, Instagram, and LinkedIn to increase brand visibility.
    • Caption & Content Strategy: Draft platform-native captions that drive comments, saves, and shares while aligning with brand campaigns.
    • Scheduling & Trend Scraping: Prepare, upload, and schedule content via social management platforms while monitoring real-time trends, audio, and viral formats.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Social Native: Immersed in TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, and LinkedIn culture—you know what makes people click, comment, and tag their friends.
  • Proactive Communicator: Unafraid to jump into comment sections of non-competing beauty, lifestyle, and media brands to forge fun digital partnerships and drive organic reach.
  • Strong Writer & Storyteller: Able to shift effortlessly between a quick-witted TikTok caption, a professional LinkedIn post, and an SEO-rich long-form blog article.
  • Tech-Savvy: Quick to pick up social scheduling software, Shopify, analytics tools, and content editing apps.
  • Collaborative & Culture-Driven: Excited to partner closely with the Creative Director, and Affiliate Coordinator to build an authentic brand community.
  • Bonus Points: An active Esthetician or Cosmetology license is a major plus!
