Pinto Valley is an open-pit copper mine located at the west end of the historic Globe-Miami mining district of central Arizona, approximately 80 miles east of Phoenix. Pinto Valley has been in operation since 1972 and has produced more than four billion pounds of copper. Acquired by Capstone from BHP in 2013, the mine is fully permitted through 2039 and a study is underway to potentially extend the mine life through 2050.

POSITION PURPOSE

The primary responsibilities of this position are to provide engineering, project management, and documentation for assigned projects associated with construction activities on tailings facilities and other projects as assigned. Other duties include support for the following: facilities planning, project execution, other engineering projects, document and drawing updates, and document support for other departments. The normal schedule is a five (5) day work week(50 hrs) during project execution and four (4) day work week (40 hrs) between projects, depending on project timing.

PEOPLE REPORTING TO THIS POSITION

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

50% office environment and 50% field environment.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Exemplify the Capstone Copper Values in all efforts and interactions while working in compliance with all MSHA safety guidelines and Pinto Valley Mine policies and procedures.
  • Developing comprehensive project plans and timelines
  • Managing and monitoring engineering tasks
  • Overseeing project budgets and expense tracking
  • Provide oversight of engineering efforts of assigned projects. Interact with work force and contractors to ensure compliance to safety and environmental standards. Conduct regular updates on project status compared to schedule and provide direction accordingly. Examine engineering work performed to ensure adherence to design and specification and provide direct and written feedback to contractors. This includes quality control and quality assurance technical responsibilities. Responsibilities may also include support for other engineers in department.
  • Maintain and expand the engineering documentation system. This includes organizing new documents into the system, maintaining proper edit permissions, and supporting the use of all functions within the system. Maintain condition of physical files and document integrity.
  • Support modification of the existing and new documents to current status via CAD and PDF editors. Support internal and external personnel in searching for documentation. Support standardization efforts of internal and external drawings and documentation.
  • Document engineering plans via CAD programs and specification documents. Produce documents for competitive bidding process and execution. Conduct project bid meetings with procurement.
  • Provide verbal and written updates on project status, Conducting project meetings and stakeholder communications.
  • Preparing detailed technical reports and documentation
  • Implementing risk mitigation strategies
  • Ensuring compliance with regulations and standards
  • Support development of the annual budget and updates to the budget by obtaining budgetary proposals for projects in a timely fashion.
  • Responsible for but not limited to all tasks/duties assigned or required.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalency
  • Bachelor's degree in civil, geotechnical, or mining engineering

YEARS OF RELEVANT EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • 3+ years of experience in mining or heavy civil industry

Preferred:

  • Project engineering experience on large civil projects
  • Quality control functions
  • Document control
  • Submittal review and tracking
  • Cost and schedule review, P6 or MS Project experience preferred
  • Project Management experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES (KSA):

  • Knowledge of PV Safety and Quality standards.
  • Technical report writing skills.
  • Good networking skills and ability to communicate with outside resources to gather needed information.
  • Ability to organize and conduct meetings inside and outside the department.
  • Expertise in the utilization of advanced planning tools such as MS Project or similar.
  • Expertise in the utilization of MS tools such as Powerpoint, WORD and EXCEL.
  • Ability to work with diverse teams that include internal and external resources; equipment contractors; and others such as architects and Engineering firms when required.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated expertise in the management of schedules and budgets.
