Wisconsin Electric Power, a subsidiary of WEC Energy Group, is seeking a Substation Electrical Engineer in our Milwaukee, Wisconsin location.This position currently offers flexibility for a hybrid work arrangement (remote/on-site) with time regularly spent in the office.
This position is part of a job family (Associate Engineer, Engineer, and Senior Engineer) where experience will be the determining factor.

Job Summary
The Substation Engineer is responsible for the design and material specification for new substations, modifications to existing substations and maintenance of existing substations. This position is expected to apply sound and diversified knowledge of electrical engineering principles and practices as well as make independent decisions concerning assigned projects. The candidate should possess a strong understanding of the design and function of substation components, control systems and general site layout requirements.
This position is part of the Substation Engineering Group which is responsible for scope development, project cost estimates, design, materials procurement, contractor administration and design review, project management/support and construction interface for capital projects. The group is also responsible for assisting in the development of substation maintenance plans and activities, associated projects, and responding to substation equipment failures and related emergent events.
Job Responsibilities
  • Assuming a lead role in the conceptual and detail design of both new substations and modifications to existing substations.
  • Development of project scope, design and material specification and procurement for capital projects and maintenance of existing substations.
  • Development of cost estimates and tracking of project budgets, construction schedules, as well as general project management.
  • Interface with various internal groups to develop optimal design solutions. These groups typically include Area Planning, Project Management, Environmental, Protection, Supply Chain, Substation Construction and
  • Maintenance, Relay Testing, Start-Up, SCADA, Operations and ATC.
  • Working with equipment suppliers and contractors of various support services, evaluation of new technologies and products for use at We Energies substations.
  • Writing and updating of specifications for labor, equipment and materials and revision of Substation Standards and Engineering Reference Manuals to reflect necessary changes per internal criteria and/or NEC, NESC, ANSI and IEEE.

Minimum Qualification
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering

This position requires unescorted access to certain critical cyber assets which would require applicants to satisfy all Company and NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection Standard 004 security requirements, which includes a background investigation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Wisconsin Professional Engineering (PE) license
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Strong analytical, project management, and team building skills

Pay Range Minimum: $68,436.68
Pay Range Maximum: $135,761.08
The pay range reflects the minimum and maximum for the position at the time of posting and may be modified in the future. The starting salary/pay within the pay range will be based on several factors, as applicable, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, shift, travel requirements, collective bargaining agreements, and business and organizational needs. At WEC Energy Group, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role.
