Job Description
Job Summary
The R&D Manager leads the Oetiker Tool Corporation (OTC) Research & Development organization and serves as a key member of both the OTC leadership team and the global Oetiker R&D network. Reporting jointly to the OTC Plant Head and the Global Head of R&D, this position is responsible for developing engineering talent, defining technical direction, and ensuring the successful delivery of innovative hand tool solutions aligned with business and customer needs.
The role is accountable for product development, testing, prototyping, engineering standards, and technical execution while partnering closely with Project Management, Product Management, Operations, Quality, and global R&D teams to bring new products from concept through launch. The position combines strategic leadership with hands-on technical engagement to ensure OTC remains a leader in hand tool innovation, product quality, and engineering excellence.
Main Accountabilities
  • Lead, coach, and develop the OTC R&D organization, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Define and execute the OTC technology and innovation roadmap in alignment with business objectives and global R&D strategy.
  • Provide technical leadership for the development of new products, technologies, and engineering capabilities, including oversight of OTC's testing, laboratory, prototyping, engineering standards, and development processes.
  • Ensure effective execution of product development activities through appropriate resource allocation, technical oversight, and organizational prioritization.
  • Provide leadership and direction to Project Management resources to ensure successful delivery of projects meeting quality, cost, and timing objectives.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Sales, Operations, and Quality to translate market needs into innovative product solutions.
  • Serve as OTC's primary connection to the global Oetiker R&D organization, driving technical collaboration, sharing best practices, and supporting global initiatives.
  • Build and maintain a high-performing engineering organization through talent acquisition, coaching, succession planning, and capability development.

Qualifications

  • Strong leadership and people-development skills with experience building high-performing engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated success in new product development and commercialization.
  • Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, product design expertise, and understanding of manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to provide strategic direction while maintaining hands-on technical credibility.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and influencing skills across functions, cultures, and organizational levels.
  • Experience with modern product development methodologies, including design validation, risk management, and continuous improvement.
  • Customer-focused mindset with strong business and commercial awareness.
  • Bachelor's Degree in an engineering function, Master's degree a plus
  • 3+ years leading teams with an engineering design environment
