JOB DESCRIPTION
The primary responsibility of the Hospitality and Tourism Teacher is to provide instruction and career-development opportunities in the hospitality, events, and tourism industry. The teacher will develop and deliver curriculum aligned with Utah State Board of Education (USBE) standards and Canyons School District (CSD) instructional expectations while providing students with meaningful, profession-based learning experiences and opportunities to develop the skills necessary for postsecondary education and careers in the hospitality and tourism industry. General responsibilities are outlined below.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
INSTRUCTION
- Teach the core content outlined in the USBE Hospitality, Events, and Tourism curriculum, Board of Education-adopted curriculum, and related concurrent enrollment coursework, as determined by an approved postsecondary partner.
- Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, and curriculum aligned with Utah CTE standards and district instructional expectations.
- Provide differentiated, individualized, and small-group instruction to meet student needs.
- Utilize active, applied, project-based, and profession-based learning to create meaningful learning experiences and effectively utilize instructional time.
- Establish and maintain a safe, positive, supportive, and professional learning environment.
- Utilize computers, educational technology, instructional resources, and classroom equipment appropriately and in accordance with district and Board of Education guidelines.
- Evaluate student academic progress and social growth using standards-aligned assessments, authentic demonstrations of mastery, and other appropriate measures.
- Maintain accurate student records, attendance records, and progress reports as required.
- Communicate with parents and guardians regarding student progress and needs through conferences, telephone calls, email, student information systems, school websites, and other approved methods.
- Identify student needs and collaborate with professional staff to support students' academic, social, emotional, behavioral, and developmental needs.
- Instruct students in citizenship and support the development of responsible, ethical, and productive members of the school and community.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND PROFESSION-BASED LEARNING
- Design and facilitate career-development and real-world learning experiences based on the CTE Career and Technical Education framework, including profession-based learning, professional skills development, student self-discovery and inquiry, entrepreneurial mindset, industry responsiveness, and districtwide access and opportunity.
- Provide learning experiences across the primary hospitality and tourism industry sectors, including lodging, transportation, food and beverage, and recreation and entertainment.
- Integrate entrepreneurial mindset, marketing, customer service, tourism, and economic-impact concepts into instruction.
- Facilitate profession-based learning opportunities such as travel planning, event coordination, tourism promotion, customer-experience design, and related industry projects.
- Guide students through project cycles that include research, planning, execution, evaluation, and presentation.
- Design and manage project-based learning experiences aligned with industry standards and workforce expectations.
- Facilitate a profession-based capstone experience that may include public presentations, tourism proposals, community-based projects, or other authentic demonstrations of student learning.
- Establish and maintain professional relationships with hospitality, tourism, business, community, postsecondary, and industry partners.
- Remain responsive to changing industry practices, workforce expectations, and emerging trends within the hospitality and tourism industry.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain professional expertise through district-provided professional development, professional learning communities, industry-based learning opportunities, and other professional-growth activities.
- Participate in faculty meetings, PLCs, committees, school initiatives, educator-evaluation procedures, and other required professional activities.
- Participate, as assigned or appropriate, in the sponsorship or support of student activities.
- Maintain effective and professional relationships with students, parents, guardians, colleagues, school staff, district staff, community members, postsecondary partners, and industry partners.
- Model professional and ethical standards and serve as a positive role model for students.
- Maintain confidentiality in compliance with FERPA, applicable laws, and district policies and procedures.
- Understand and adhere to applicable federal and state laws, Board of Education policies, district policies and procedures, school expectations, and safety protocols.
- Maintain required inventory records and appropriately manage instructional materials, equipment, supplies, and other assigned resources.
- Follow district procedures related to the use, storage, maintenance, and management of instructional materials and equipment.
- Maintain predictable and reliable attendance.
OTHER DUTIES
- Assist the CTE Director, Principal, or other district personnel with special projects as assigned.
- Participate in professional organizations, industry activities, and other professional-development opportunities as appropriate.
- Support school, district, CTE, and industry initiatives that enhance student learning and career opportunities.
During times of state or district emergency, all employees may be required to perform additional duties that are not required on a normal basis in support of educational and operational priorities. Examples may include general cleaning and sanitizing of work areas, providing remote assistance to students and staff, and performing other reasonable duties as needed.
