What is canvassing?

A canvassing job involves going door-to-door, making phone calls, or engaging with people in public spaces to promote a cause, product, or service. Canvassers often work for political campaigns, nonprofits, or sales organizations to generate support, fundraise, or gather information. Strong communication skills and persistence are key to success in this role.

What does a canvasser do?

A typical day for a canvasser involves traveling to assigned neighborhoods or public spaces, engaging with residents face-to-face to share information or gather feedback, and recording their interactions using digital tools or forms. Canvassers often work in teams and receive daily training or strategy briefings before going into the field. The role requires walking for extended periods, handling various weather conditions, and interacting respectfully with people from different backgrounds. Success in canvassing is measured by outreach goals met, data accuracy, and quality of community engagement. Over time, experienced canvassers may move into leadership or trainer roles, managing teams and coordinating outreach campaigns.

What skills and qualifications are needed for canvassing?

Canvassing as a job involves soliciting opinions, sales, or support through direct contact and is generally legal when conducted within local laws and regulations. However, certain restrictions may apply, such as requiring permits or adhering to no-solicitation zones, and laws vary by jurisdiction. It is important for canvassers to understand and follow applicable rules to ensure lawful activity.

Job description

Join Our Team as a Fundraiser for Planned Parenthood, IRC, and WWF
Inspire people to take action by sharing stories of the work these non-profit organizations are performing and make a real difference!

Pay: $24/hr + performance-based bonuses

Schedule: Wednesday to Sunday (five-day workweek)

Location: Austin, TX (outdoors in busy public spaces)

About Us:

At New Canvassing Experience, we believe that conversation and connection can change the culture about how we treat each other and our planet. As a group of forward-thinking individuals, we wanted to create a new canvassing experience: for our donors, for the non-profits we work with, and for you – our canvassers.

We believe in creating a work culture that inspires creativity and excellence in fundraising. We teach storytelling with passion to encourage the public to make a change for our future. We strive every day to work with integrity, value our people, and maximize the fundraising efforts for each of our clients.

We’re proud to partner with organizations like the ACLU, IRC, Planned Parenthood, World Wildlife Fund, and more to support their vital missions. Our approach is rooted in years of experience and a commitment to sparking real change through outreach and engagement with the public.

Job Purpose:
To represent NCE’s ‘For Purpose’ clients by conveying key messages to potential supporters in order to secure a sustainable base of long-term recurring donors with strong donor retention.

What We Offer: We know that our success depends on our people. That’s why we prioritize work-life balance, career growth, and a supportive environment. We offer:

· Competitive pay: Starting at $24/hr + performance-based bonuses

· Health, Dental, and Vision insurance available after 90 days

· Paid Time Off and Sick Leave to support your well-being

· Ongoing training and coaching to hone your skills and learn new ones

· Career advancement for those who show the qualities of a good leader and want to take on additional responsibilities

· Team-building activities and a positive, inclusive workplace culture

· National and International Travel to work at major events and to work with teams in other cities

· 401(k) management to help you plan for the future

Key Accountabilities:

· Attend public and private sites, working outside in the elements, which are allocated in advance by NCE management to actively engage with members of the public

· Meet the recruitment targets set, a minimum of 8 new committed donors per week

· Represent NCE, its clients, and yourself in a professional and informed manner at all times and in accordance with our Codes of Conduct

· [Working with your team to make a positive impact on your communities]

· Provide accurate and timely reporting and administration in line with management requirements; ensure all paper and electronic records are completed accurately

· Be willing and able to work weekends, some public holidays, and some evenings

Who We’re Looking For:

As a Canvasser, your job is to get people’s attention, build rapport, and to tell stories with passion and emotion and drive people to give ongoing financial contributions. You’ll work with teammates in locations around the city and position yourself as a helpful and friendly member of the community.

Previous fundraising or canvassing experience is NOT required!

We’re seeking individuals who are passionate about social and environmental justice and are eager to make a difference. We value demonstrated success in customer service, sales, retail, marketing, or any people-facing role. We also value experience in event planning, community organizing, and teamwork/leadership.

We’re looking for candidates who are:

· Self-motivated & goal-oriented: You like to set and meet personal and professional targets.

· Adaptable & resourceful: You plan ahead, take initiative, you’re comfortable receiving and implementing feedback, and you calmly and considerately work through obstacles.

· Confident communicators: You’re responsive to teammates and leaders, and you’re good at meeting new people and fostering a genuine connection.

· Emotionally intelligent & resilient: People enjoy and remember their interactions with you, and you handle rejection with grace.

· Punctual, Honest, and Accountable: You show up where and when you’re expected, you tell the truth, and you make amends and improvements rather than excuses.

· Passionate: You believe a more just, safe, and inclusive world is possible, and you want to fight to make it a reality.

No matter your background, we provide paid training to orient you to this unique position and to give you the foundational tools you need to ensure your success.
