What unique challenges might I face managing payroll in the cannabis industry, and how can I prepare for them?

Managing payroll in the cannabis industry often involves navigating unique regulatory requirements and banking limitations, as many financial institutions are hesitant to work with cannabis businesses due to federal laws. This can result in more manual processes, frequent audits, and a need for meticulous record-keeping. To prepare, familiarize yourself with state and local compliance requirements, stay updated on evolving regulations, and consider specialized payroll software designed for the cannabis sector. Collaborating closely with HR, compliance officers, and external legal advisors is also common to ensure accuracy and minimize legal risks.
