Understanding these differences helps job seekers identify the right career path based on their skills and interests.

What are some common challenges faced by Cannabis Extraction Technicians during the extraction process?

Cannabis Extraction Technicians often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent product quality and yield, troubleshooting complex laboratory equipment, and adhering to strict safety and regulatory protocols. The extraction process requires careful monitoring of variables like temperature and pressure, and even minor deviations can impact the final product. Additionally, technicians must stay up to date with evolving compliance standards and documentation requirements, which vary by jurisdiction. Being detail-oriented and adaptable helps overcome these challenges and ensures successful, safe extractions.

What are Cannabis Extraction Techs?

Cannabis Extraction Technicians are professionals who specialize in extracting cannabinoids, terpenes, and other valuable compounds from cannabis plants. They use various methods such as CO2, ethanol, or hydrocarbon extraction to produce concentrates, oils, and other cannabis products. Their responsibilities include operating complex machinery, ensuring product purity and safety, and adhering to strict industry regulations. These technicians play a crucial role in the creation of high-quality cannabis extracts used in medical and recreational products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cannabis Extraction Tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cannabis Extraction Tech, you need a solid understanding of chemistry, laboratory safety protocols, and experience with extraction processes, often supported by a degree in chemistry or a related field. Familiarity with extraction equipment such as closed-loop systems, rotary evaporators, and analytical tools like HPLC, along with compliance certifications, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork are essential soft skills for maintaining accuracy and safety. These skills ensure high-quality product output, regulatory compliance, and safe operations in a highly regulated and technical environment.

Job description

Meet Cirona Labs

Cirona Labs manufactures water-soluble cannabinoid ingredients, for application in beverages, tinctures, topicals, and edibles.
Our team has over 100 years experience developing products for major CPG and cannabis companies. Our cGMP-certified lab is based in upstate New York on Cornell Universityโ€™s Technology Farm.
Premium products deserve premium ingredients. Cironaโ€™s custom formulation approach scans an R&D library of over 900 ingredients, using data-driven science to create the most compatible match possible.

The Role

As a Cannabis Extraction Technician, youโ€™ll help convert incoming biomass into consistent bulk oils and finished products through hydrocarbon and ethanol extraction. This role exists to keep production moving safely, on schedule, and in-spec while you build hands-on manufacturing skills.
Key responsibilities include running extraction, recovery, purging, and decarboxylation steps; completing accurate batch and inventory entries (including yield/weight calculations) in Canix and related tools; supporting equipment upkeep; coordinating timing with the Director of Extraction and Processing; and contributing to efficiency, quality, and SOP improvements.
Required qualifications/skills:
- Entry-level readiness for a regulated production environment; willingness to learn and follow written procedures
- Strong attention to detail for documentation and calculations
- Comfort using computers (Microsoft Office and inventory/production systems)
- Ability to work onsite in Rochester, NY, Mondayโ€“Friday 2:00 pmโ€“10:30 pm, and wear required PPE
Apply to launch your career as a Cannabis Extraction Technician with Cirona Labs.

Your Shift, Visualized

You clock in for the afternoon shift, review the dayโ€™s run plan, and get set up with PPE and paperwork. Youโ€™ll spend focused blocks of time monitoring process stages, checking that readings and weights line up, and keeping records clean so everything stays traceable. Between runs, youโ€™ll prep for whatโ€™s next, communicate handoffs with the team, and flag anything that could impact quality or timing. The pace is steady and hands-on, and youโ€™ll learn from experienced operators as you gain confidence as a Cannabis Extraction Technician.
