What is cannabis automation?

Cannabis automation refers to the use of technology and automated systems to streamline and optimize various processes in the cultivation, processing, packaging, and distribution of cannabis. This can include environmental controls, irrigation, trimming, packaging, and inventory management. Automation helps cannabis businesses increase efficiency, maintain consistent quality, reduce labor costs, and comply with regulatory requirements. As the industry grows, automation is becoming increasingly important to stay competitive and scale operations effectively.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in cannabis automation and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in cannabis automation often encounter challenges such as integrating new technologies with existing cultivation systems, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining equipment reliability in a rapidly evolving industry. Working closely with cross-functional teams, such as cultivation, compliance, and IT, is crucial to create seamless automation workflows. Ongoing training, proactive maintenance schedules, and staying updated with industry regulations can help address these challenges and ensure smooth operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in cannabis automation, and why are they important?

To excel in Cannabis Automation, you typically need a background in engineering or plant sciences, experience with automated systems, and knowledge of cannabis cultivation processes. Familiarity with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), environmental monitoring software, and automated irrigation or lighting systems is crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help professionals adapt to evolving technologies and collaborate with cultivation teams. These skills ensure efficient, consistent, and compliant production in a highly regulated and rapidly advancing industry.

Cannabis Cultivation Technician

BeLeaf Medical

Saint Louis, MO • On-site

$17 - $18/hr

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Retirement, PTO

Re-posted 22 days ago

Job description

$17.00+ per hour  |  Full-Time  |  Missouri

At BeLeaf Medical, we cover 100% of individual employee health, dental, and vision premiums — plus short-term disability and life insurance. That’s not a standard benefit. That’s a commitment. If you’re ready to build a career in cannabis with a company that actually invests in its people, keep reading.

Who We Are

BeLeaf Medical is one of Missouri’s leading vertically integrated cannabis companies, operating Swade Dispensaries and Sinse Cannabis. From propagation to shelf, we grow, manufacture, and deliver premium cannabis flower and infused products to Missouri’s most discerning patients and customers. Our cultivation team is the engine behind everything we do.

The Role

As a Cultivation Technician at Sinse Cannabis, you’ll work hands-on with cannabis plants at every stage of production — from propagation and canopy management through harvest, post-harvest trimming, and packaging support. This is a cross-functional, cross-trained role: you’ll develop real expertise across the full indoor cannabis grow cycle, with exposure to cultivation, harvest, and post-harvest processing departments.

Whether you’re brand new to cannabis or bringing prior horticulture or indoor growing experience, this role offers genuine skill-building, a strong team culture, and a clear path to advance within one of Missouri’s premier cannabis companies.

What You’ll Do
  • Monitor cultivation and post-harvest areas daily — irrigation, environmental conditions, pest management (IPM), and overall crop quality
  • Execute plant care tasks including propagation, transplanting, pruning, trellising, and harvesting per established SOPs
  • Assist post-harvest processing: bucking/destemming, trimming, sorting, and preparation for drying, curing, and packaging
  • Conduct quality control checks during and after harvest to ensure product meets company standards
  • Maintain accurate METRC/ERP data entry; assist with plant tagging, batch tracking, and inventory movements
  • Support waste handling and destruction in compliance with Missouri cannabis regulations
  • Uphold strict sanitation and biosecurity protocols — cleaning and disinfecting tools, equipment, and work areas routinely
  • Transport plants and plant material throughout the facility for transplanting, room loading, harvesting, and processing
  • Assist with facility setup and maintenance, including trellis installation, rack moves, and multi-tier cultivation system support
  • Accurately complete task tracking and production records per company and regulatory requirements
  • Collaborate with team members and management on crop status, workflow, and operational needs
  • Support facility-wide projects including deep cleans, room resets, and preventative maintenance
What We’re Looking For
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and eligible to obtain a Missouri Cannabis Agent ID
  • Prior experience in horticulture, indoor growing, or cannabis cultivation is a plus — but not required
  • Strong attention to detail and clear, team-oriented communication skills
  • Solid work ethic and genuine eagerness to learn in a fast-paced production environment
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks for extended periods while standing
  • Physical ability to lift up to 75 lbs; bend, climb, and work above shoulder height; push carts and wheelbarrows; maneuver in confined spaces
  • Comfortable wearing PPE and working alongside automation equipment
  • Availability to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed
Compensation & Benefits
  • $17.00 per hour starting, starting with potential to increase to $18 after successful training.
  • Health, Dental & Vision Insurance — 100% of individual employee premiums covered by BeLeaf Medical
  • Short-Term Disability & Life Insurance — also fully company-paid
  • 401(k) with Company Match
  • 12 days of Paid Time Off annually
  • 9 Paid Holidays, including 3 personal days
  • Generous Employee Cannabis Discount

Ready to grow with us? Apply today and join the team at BeLeaf Medical — where we build Missouri’s best cannabis from the ground up, and take care of the people who make it happen.
