How much do cancer immunotherapy jobs pay per hour?
What are the typical responsibilities of a professional working in cancer immunotherapy?
Professionals in Cancer Immunotherapy are generally involved in designing and conducting laboratory experiments to investigate immune responses to cancer, developing novel therapeutic approaches, and analyzing clinical or preclinical data. Daily tasks may include running assays, managing tissue samples, writing research reports, and collaborating with cross-functional teams such as oncologists, immunologists, and data scientists. They often participate in regular team meetings to discuss progress and troubleshoot experimental challenges. This dynamic, highly collaborative environment fosters professional growth and offers opportunities to contribute to groundbreaking treatments in the oncology field.
What is a cancer immunotherapy job?
A Cancer Immunotherapy job involves researching, developing, and implementing treatments that harness the body's immune system to fight cancer. Professionals in this field may work in clinical research, drug development, or patient care, focusing on immunotherapies like checkpoint inhibitors, CAR-T cell therapy, and cancer vaccines. Roles can range from scientists and clinicians to regulatory specialists and biopharmaceutical engineers. The goal is to improve treatment efficacy, reduce side effects, and advance personalized medicine in oncology.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in cancer immunotherapy?
To excel in Cancer Immunotherapy roles, candidates typically need a strong background in immunology, oncology, molecular biology, or a related biomedical field, often supported by an advanced degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent experience). Familiarity with laboratory techniques such as flow cytometry, cell culture, CRISPR, and bioinformatics tools, as well as relevant safety certifications, is highly valuable. Excellent analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork are essential soft skills for success in this multidisciplinary area. These competencies are vital because Cancer Immunotherapy professionals contribute directly to developing innovative therapies that require technical expertise, meticulous collaboration, and effective communication.

Position description
A specialist opportunity in flow cytometry and immunology research is available at the University of California, San Francisco in the Lee Laboratory. The Lee Lab works on cancer immunotherapy is part of the Department of Radiation Oncology and Department of Medicine - Hematology/Oncology.
We are a lab focused on cancer immunotherapy research, including discovery of new immunotherapy resistance pathways that make cancer immunotherapy less effective using preclinical and clinical data. We will also test new treatments to overcome resistance mechanisms.
This specialist will assist with flow cytometry, clinical and preclinical specimen preparation for cytometry, cell sorting, and 10X RNA seq, cell culture, preclinical mouse research (including surgical procedures), molecular biology and immunology in a new translational cancer research laboratory at UCSF with a focus on next generation cancer immunotherapeutics. The candidate will support the lab in using multiparameter flow cytometry, high-throughput RNAseq, spatial transcriptomics, and other cutting-edge techniques with clinical sample analysis, develop novel animal models to conduct mechanistic studies with parallel patient sample analysis, and test preclinical innovative immunotherapy strategies with CAR T cells, stereotactic radiation, and mouse metastasis surgery.
Specifically, the specialist's tasks will include the support for the lab's flow cytometry, clinical and preclinical specimen reception/preparation for cytometry, T cell culture, mouse research colony handling, molecular biology (RT-PCR, CRISPR, cloning, gel eletrophoresis, transfections, DNA/RNA extraction for transcriptomic studies, chip arrays, cellular culture/screens, etc), flow cytometry data analysis, and clinical tissue procurement and processing for the studies.
The specialist will be trained by the Lee Lab for relevant tasks if needed and also be able to take advantage of other training and learning opportunities within the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and other related entities at UCSF. We hope this experience will prepare the applicant for future opportunities in biomedical research.
Required Qualifications:
• Junior - Specialists appointed at the junior rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in biology, immunology, bioinformatics, computer science, data science, computational biology, or a related quantitative/scientific discipline or at least four years of research experience (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, social science research methods, or creative activities).
• Assistant - Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess (or in process of obtaining) a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or a baccalaureate degree in biology, immunology, bioinformatics, computer science, data science, computational biology, or a related quantitative/scientific discipline with 3 or more years of research experience.
