What is cancer immunology?

Cancer immunology is a field of research and medicine that studies how the immune system interacts with cancer cells. Scientists in this area aim to understand how the immune system can detect and destroy cancer cells, and why sometimes cancer evades immune defenses. This knowledge is used to develop new treatments, such as immunotherapies, that help the body’s own immune system fight cancer more effectively. Cancer immunology has led to significant advances in cancer treatment, offering hope for improved patient outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cancer immunologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cancer Immunologist, you need a strong background in biology, immunology, oncology, and typically a Ph.D. or M.D. in a related field. Expertise with laboratory techniques such as flow cytometry, cell culture, molecular biology assays, and familiarity with data analysis software are commonly required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective collaboration are crucial soft skills for designing experiments and communicating findings. These competencies enable professionals to advance cancer research, develop innovative therapies, and contribute meaningfully to multidisciplinary teams.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals working in cancer immunology research?

Professionals in cancer immunology often encounter challenges such as rapidly evolving scientific knowledge, complex experimental design, and the need for multidisciplinary collaboration. Keeping up with the latest advancements in immunotherapy and understanding tumor-immune system interactions require continuous learning. Additionally, translating laboratory findings into clinical applications can be time-consuming and demands strong teamwork with clinicians, data scientists, and regulatory experts. These challenges are balanced by the dynamic and impactful nature of the work, offering significant opportunities for career growth.

Job description

A postdoctoral position is available in Dr. Zhibin Zhang's laboratory in the Department of Immunology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. The Department of Immunology, chaired by Nobel Laureate Dr. James P. Allison, is internationally recognized for its excellence in basic and translational immunology, with a particular emphasis on cancer immunology. Our laboratory is dedicated to elucidating the molecular mechanisms of pyroptosis in tumor cells and developing novel pyroptosis-based therapeutic strategies to enhance antitumor immunity and improve cancer treatment.
This position will focus on investigating the role of pyroptosis in tumor immunology. The successful candidate will use a combination of biochemical, molecular, cellular, mouse genetic, and systems biology approaches to investigate the activation and regulation of gasdermin proteins, the executioners of pyroptosis, in the context of tumor-immune interactions.
All duties and responsibilities are carried out in compliance with institutional policies, ethical research standards, and applicable federal and state regulations.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The postdoctoral fellow will learn to investigate how cell death signaling pathways regulate the functions of tumor-infiltrating immune cells, leading to tumor suppression and enhanced antitumor immune responses.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must have a recent Ph.D. degree or equivalent in related biomedical field with strong self-motivation.
Preference will be given to applicants with extensive experience in mouse tumor models and tumor immunology and/or biochemistry and protein purification. Applicants with backgrounds in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, immunology, tumor biology, or related disciplines are all encouraged to apply.
ADDITIONAL APPLICATION INFORMATION
For more information about our research, please refer to our recent publications (Nature 2020, PMC7123794; Nature Reviews Drug Discovery 2021, PMC7944254; Science Immunology 2023, PMC10338320; Annual Review of Immunology 2026, PMC13215008).
