Johnson & Johnson MedTech is currently recruiting for a Manager, Equipment Development Engineering, R&D - MedTech for our handheld medical devices business. The position is in Cincinnati, OH & will work a Flex/Hybrid schedule with 3 days per week on-site. Relocation assistance is available for highly qualified candidates.
The Johnson & Johnson MedTech business offers a broad range of products, platforms and technologies including sutures, topical skin adhesives, hemostasis products, surgical staplers, trocars, energy devices, and synthetic mesh devices-used in a wide variety of open and minimally invasive surgical procedures. Specialties include cardiovascular, orthopedics, support for treatment of colorectal and thoracic conditions, women's health conditions, hernias, cancer, and obesity. The portion of Johnson & Johnson MedTech, Inc. based in Raritan, New Jersey, was founded more than 80 years ago as a pioneer in suture development and manufacturing, helping to transform the safety and effectiveness of surgery.
You will be responsible for:
Functional Leadership
  • Serve as the functional manager for the Mechanical Equipment Development Engineering Team, providing technical leadership and oversight.
  • Partner with the Lead Development Engineering and Electrical/Software Development Teams to deliver robust device assembly solutions.
  • Establish and reinforce engineering best practices, standards, and development methodologies related to assembly equipment development.
  • Provide technical guidance and problem-solving support for complex development challenges for the business.
  • Act as a technical escalation point for equipment development issues impacting financials, quality, safety, or performance.

People
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of 8-10 full time engineers and contractors.
  • Conduct performance management, goal setting, coaching, and career development planning.
  • Identify skill gaps and drive development through mentoring, training, and hiring.
  • Ensure team compliance with design controls and quality / regulatory system requirements.
  • Build functional communities of practice and subject matter expertise.

Processes and Execution
  • Implement plans to deliver platform goals as directed by R&D leadership, ensuring achievement of team goals within established timelines and budgets.
  • Partner with cross-functional leaders to identify and fulfill resource needs to deliver on business priorities and commitments across NPD Projects.
  • Oversee all NPD development activities for the function including requirements generation, risk analysis, DFA input, equipment debug, characterization, commissioning, transfer and qualification.
  • Accountable for relevant equipment development standards, procedures and metrics.
  • Ensure appropriate training and development programs are implemented to advance equipment development skills and capabilities.
  • Ensure engineering deliverables meet device performance, safety, quality, financial and regulatory requirements.
  • Partner with the broader J&J Surgery organization to leverage synergies and drive efficiencies.

Technology and Innovation
  • Drive continuous improvement in assembly technology, engineering execution and documentation quality.
  • Develop innovative & technical solutions; build and leverage internal and external partnerships to advance technology and manufacturing processes.
  • Accelerate and improve team outcomes by leveraging and deploying AI, data analytics, modeling and simulation techniques across the function.

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical or related field) is required.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in a dynamic R&D environment with emphasis on production assembly line development, commissioning and qualification is required.
  • People management experience is required.
  • Experience in a medical device production environment or other regulated industry is required.
  • Experience applying Design for Assembly (DfA) principles to improve product design and assembly process performance is required.
  • Experience developing assembly processes and equipment and from prototyping, through process development, characterization and validation is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with internal and external suppliers to achieve outcomes
  • Must have proven track record of leadership and achieving objectives in a team-based environment.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, networking, teamwork, problem solving and influencing skills. Must be proficient at breaking down complex issues to drive to solutions.
  • DMAIC Six Sigma knowledge is preferred.
  • Direct experience working in manufacturing is preferred.
  • This position may require up to up to 20% domestic and international travel.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :
$117,000.00 - $201,250.00
Additional Description for Pay Transparency:
Subject to the terms of their respective plans, employees are eligible to participate in the Company's consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).

Vacation -120 hours per calendar year
