What does a Cancer Biologist do?

A Cancer Biologist researches the causes, development, and potential treatments for cancer at the cellular and molecular levels. They conduct laboratory experiments, analyze patient samples, and collaborate with medical professionals to understand cancer progression. Their work helps identify new drug targets, improve therapies, and contribute to early detection methods. Many Cancer Biologists work in academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies, or government agencies, focusing on both basic and applied research.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Cancer Biologist position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cancer Biologist, you need a solid foundation in molecular and cellular biology, oncology, and laboratory research methods, typically supported by an advanced degree (PhD or MSc) in a life science field. Experience using laboratory techniques such as flow cytometry, CRISPR, and bioinformatics tools, along with familiarity with data analysis software and adherence to GLP standards, is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary research teams are important soft skills for this role. These competencies are essential for designing robust experiments, generating reliable results, and driving meaningful advances in cancer research.

What is the salary of a cancer biologist?

The average salary of a cancer biologist in the United States ranges from $60,000 to $100,000 per year, depending on experience, education, and location. Entry-level positions typically start lower, while those with advanced degrees and research experience can earn higher salaries, especially in research institutions or biotech companies.

What biology jobs pay over $100k?

Cancer biologists and other specialized biology roles such as biomedical directors, research scientists, and clinical trial managers often earn over $100,000 annually, especially with advanced degrees and experience. Positions in biotech, pharmaceuticals, and research institutions that involve leadership, grant management, or extensive expertise tend to have higher salaries. Skills in data analysis, laboratory techniques, and regulatory knowledge can also contribute to higher compensation.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Cancer Biologist?

Cancer Biologists typically spend their days designing and conducting laboratory experiments, analyzing experimental data, and documenting findings in detailed reports. They often collaborate with other scientists, such as geneticists and chemists, as well as participate in lab meetings and present their research to broader teams. Responsibilities may also include maintaining laboratory equipment, staying current with scientific literature, and occasionally supervising junior researchers or students. This variety ensures that each day can bring new challenges and learning opportunities, making the role both dynamic and rewarding.

What can I do with a cancer biology degree?

A cancer biologist can work in research laboratories, academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies, or healthcare settings, focusing on understanding cancer mechanisms, developing treatments, or conducting clinical trials. The role often requires skills in laboratory techniques, data analysis, and knowledge of molecular biology, with opportunities for advancement into senior research, management, or specialized consulting positions.

What does a cancer biologist do?

A cancer biologist researches the biological mechanisms that cause and promote cancer development. They study cancer cells, analyze genetic and molecular data, and often work in laboratories using tools like microscopes and cell cultures to develop new treatments or diagnostic methods.

Job description

A postdoctoral training position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Benjamin Levi, in the Center for Organogenesis and Trauma, Children's Research Institute and Center for Mineral Researcher at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. The Postdoctoral Researcher would be joining a basic and translational laboratory funded by the NIH and DOD that consists of post-doctoral fellows, medical students, technicians and a research scientist supervised by Dr. Benjamin Levi.

Research Focus The Levi Lab investigates how cellular plasticity, inflammatory signaling, and tissue microenvironments influence disease outcomes following injury and in cancer. Ongoing cancer-focused projects investigate mechanisms underlying osteosarcoma and related musculoskeletal malignancies, including:

How tumor-stromal and tumor-immune interactions shape cancer cell fate

The role of nerves and on tumor progression

Shared molecular pathways between regeneration, fibrosis, and oncogenesis

Identification of therapeutic vulnerabilities within the tumor microenvironment

This work integrates cancer biology, developmental and regenerative pathways, immunology, and in vivo disease models, with direct relevance to patient outcomes. This position is ideal for a scientist interested in applying modern cancer biology approaches to clinically relevant, understudied tumor contexts at the intersection of oncology and tissue biology.

Preferred Experience

Bone, soft tissue, or sarcoma biology

Tumor microenvironment, stromal biology, or cancer-associated inflammation

In vivo cancer models

Single-cell, spatial, or multi-omic profiling

Translational or clinically motivated oncology research

This research integrates developmental biology, regenerative medicine, and immunology providing postdoctoral fellows with a rare opportunity to connect fundamental musculoskeletal biology to clinically relevant outcomes.

Training Environment

The Levi Laboratory is a well-funded (NIH and DoD), highly collaborative basic and translational research group composed of postdoctoral fellows, clinician-scientists, medical students, technicians, and research scientists. Postdoctoral fellows are encouraged to drive independent cancer-focused projects, develop interdisciplinary collaborations, and lead first-author publications.

The training environment emphasizes:

Mechanistic, hypothesis-driven cancer biology

Strong mentorship with increasing scientific independence

Exposure to translational and clinically informed research questions

Active support for academic, industry, and translational career paths

Vision of the Levi Laboratory: Enhance the human experience.

Mission of Levi Laboratory: Maintain a culture of collaboration, connection, rigor and wellness to support ground-breaking research using state of the art techniques and technologies to help those afflicted by injuries and diseases of the skin and musculoskeletal systems.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Cancer biology, Immunology, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics or other relevant branches of biological sciences. Experience in immunology, animal handling and surgery, single cell sequencing, molecular and cell biology, matrix biology, histologic analyses and flow cytometry leading to publication in peer-reviewed journals is recommended.
