Position Summary: 

The Camp Ranger ensures Girl Scouts of Wisconsin – Badgerland’s Camp Ehawee is safe, well-maintained, clean, and welcoming for our campers, volunteers, and guests. Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Camp Ranger is responsible for the day-to-day operations, maintenance, and stewardship of the property and may provide support at Camp Brandenburg as needed. The position promotes a culture of safety, outstanding customer service, and continuous improvement while helping preserve and enhance the camp experience for current and future Girl Scouts.

This full-time position is based at Camp Ehawee (Mindoro, WI). The Camp Ranger will be responsible for the operational needs of that location. The general schedule will consist of five 7.5-hour workdays, generally Monday through Friday. A council vehicle and fuel are provided. Occasional weekend work is required to support camp operations, special events, and other property needs. Camp Ranger is required to work during the summer to ensure safety during heavy camp usage, and time off will be limited during youth camp season (annually May-August).

This role requires the individual to live onsite and serve as the primary point of contact for camp operations, maintenance, and emergencies.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Facilities Management

• Oversees the maintenance and repair of all camp facilities, equipment, and grounds, including cabins, lodges, trails, and outdoor activity areas.
• Performs and coordinates routine cleaning of camp facilities and grounds, ensuring buildings and outdoor spaces are clean, organized, and prepared for year-round use.
• Conduct preventive maintenance programs for buildings, vehicles, equipment, and infrastructure.
• Maintain camp roads, parking areas, bridges, fences, signage, and gates.
• Coordinate snow removal and seasonal weather preparation.
• Inspect playgrounds, challenge course areas, waterfront support facilities, and program spaces for safety.
• Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies, equipment, and replacement parts.
• Recommend capital improvement projects and long-term maintenance priorities.
• Performs routine inspections to ensure the safety, cleanliness, and functionality of all facilities.
• Manages contractors and vendors for specialized maintenance or repairs.
• Coordinates and support seasonal opening and closing of camp facilities.
• Ensure facilities meet GSUSA standards, ACA standards (if applicable), and local regulatory requirements.
• Maintains trails, landscaping, and outdoor recreational areas to provide a safe and enjoyable environment.
• Operates and maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment, including tractors, mowers, and utility vehicles.
• Monitors and manage utility systems, including water, septic, and electrical systems.

Customer Service

•  Acts as a welcoming onsite host for camp visitors, ensuring a positive experience for all participants.
• Partner with the outdoor program team and staff to ensure a seamless and positive customer experience for members and camp guests.
• Supervise volunteer projects, including Girl Scout High Awards, service units, and community groups.
• Maintain updated emergency plans and communicate procedures to staff and guests.
• Support outside user groups to ensure compliance with council and safety standards.
• Fosters a strong sense of community among campers, staff, and volunteers.

 Safety and Emergency Management

•  Serves as the onsite emergency responder, addressing and resolving incidents or accidents in a timely manner.
• Ensures compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
• Collaborates with local emergency services and follow established emergency protocols.

Administrative Duties 

• Supervise part-time maintenance assistant.
• Maintain accurate maintenance logs, inspection records, equipment records, and regulatory documentation.
• Coordinate work orders and prioritize maintenance requests.
• Order maintenance supplies and equipment within approved purchasing guidelines.
• Assist with developing annual maintenance schedules and capital replacement plans.
• Maintains records of maintenance schedules, repairs, and inventory.
• Assists in budget preparation by providing input on facility and equipment needs.
• Submits regular reports to the Director of Facilities regarding camp conditions and updates.
• Works within the established budget, and maintains expenses and receipts as needed.
• Belief in the mission and values of Girl Scouting; be willing to subscribe to the principles expressed in the Promise and Law and Wisconsin Badgerland Girl Scouts mission, vision, and values.

Education & Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or trade certification preferred.
• Minimum five years' experience in general property maintenance, including plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, painting, and grounds upkeep.
• Other combinations of education, with relevant experience that demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position, will be considered.
• Strong knowledge of building and grounds maintenance, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical systems, and landscaping.
• Ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and utility systems.
• Certification in CPR, First Aid, and AED (or willingness to obtain).
• Familiarity with local building codes and environmental regulations.
• Possesses critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
• Ability to react in a crisis situation with a clear mind.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
• Demonstrated ability and sensitivity working with youth and persons of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and lifestyles.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience working with cloud-based platforms and Salesforce (or other CRM systems) preferred.  
• Outstanding project management skills and operates with an entrepreneurial, solutions-oriented mindset.
• Skilled relationship builder with a demonstrated ability to motivate and collaborate effectively across every level of the organization.
• A proactive team player willing to pitch in at all levels while also holding a big picture, systems thinking mindset.
  
• Exceptional written and verbal communicator with staff, volunteers, and guests.
• Strong work ethic with a high degree of curiosity and a learning orientation; someone who leads and operates with a high level of integrity, confidentiality, and discretion.
• Spanish/Bilingual skills a plus.
• Be or become a registered member of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America; have a working knowledge of Girl Scout philosophy and programming and be committed to the Girl Scout mission. Prior Girl Scout experience is not required.

Other Requirements:

• Must reside onsite at the resident camp year-round as a condition of employment, sign a council-provided rental agreement, and maintain renters' insurance with proof of coverage.
• Must successfully pass a criminal background check and motor vehicle record check as a condition of employment and maintain eligibility throughout employment.
• Possess a valid Wisconsin drivers’ License and proof of insurance.
• Ability to maintain insurability under the council's automobile insurance policy.
• This position requires the ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed. Must be available to respond to emergencies and urgent maintenance issues outside of regular working hours.
• Anticipated time away from property is 10% during working hours.

• The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must be able to withstand:
  • Must be able to work in an outside environment, where you have the ability to walk/hike daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Operate office equipment manually.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds at times.
