Job Description

This announcement is specific to the Creative Arts Camp. If interested in other camp program areas, you must apply directly to those positions.
The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) Creative Arts Camp is seeking Camp Assistant Directors and Directors for temporary summer employment to support camp programs by planning and leading a variety of art experiences for children ages 5-8 & 8-11 (depending on the camp).
Responsibilities
Staff must commit to working from June 29 - August 14 (core camp dates). Training will begin in mid to late May through June, which includes online courses with virtual and in-person trainings during weekday evenings and possibly a Saturday. Several positions are available, and hours vary.
Qualifications
Minimums:
Assistant Director @ $19.49/Hour
Performing supervisory and administrative duties, including managing recreation activities, and processing participant and program evaluations.
  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent; plus
  • Some experience working with youth or administering recreation programs.

Director @ $23.46/Hour
Directing summer camp programs, developing curriculum, and performing administrative duties.
  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent; plus
  • Considerable experience administering recreation programs; including
  • Some experience leading/supervising recreation programs.*

*Substitution: Completion of some college coursework may substitute for the experience requirement for the Director only.
Licenses/Certifications: Adult and Child First Aid/CPR/AED Certification, or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire (Training provided by Department.)
Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
  • Working in Summer Camp programs or Arlington Camps;
  • Teaching art and working with children; and/or
  • Experience/willingness to work with individuals with disabilities.

Successful candidates will have good character and integrity, effective communication skills, and reliable transportation, including the ability to complete tasks, take initiative, and work successfully in a team environment.
Special Requirements
If selected, all summer staff may be required to:
  • Agree to a criminal background check (for applicants 18 years and older).
  • Provide references, which will be requested at time of interview.
  • Attend all required trainings, wear a uniform, and ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Stand and walk for a prolonged periods of time during the work shift.
  • Be CPR and First Aid Certified as of the first day of camp for the Camp Director or other designated positions.
  • Possess a driver's license and complete a successful driving license record check (for applicants 18 years and older).
  • Provide personal care as needed to campers (training provided).
  • Arlington County requires that all employees have a bank account to accept direct payroll deposits.

Additional Information
Work Hours: May vary between 35-40 hours per week, 7-8 hours a day between the hours of 8am-6pm.
