Job description

Description
The Culture Camp Manager position assumes overall leadership of planning and implementation of the BBNC Culture Camp program. The Culture Camp Manager will be responsible for working on overall planning and operations for the camp, including the development of BBNC camp facilities, coordination of site preparation/construction, outreach and engagement, curriculum planning, identification and selection of appropriate staff, procurement, and all travel/supplies/logistics. This position will report to the Sr, VP of Shareholder Development.
Essential Duties & Job Functions
  • Manage the entire planning process in the lead up to the launch of the annual culture camp(s).
  • Manage camp project timeline, camp structure, & budget.
  • Create an outreach and engagement plan to keep in lock step with key partners in the region and outside of the region. Build and maintain collaborative relationships with groups, organizations, and partners, including those who may wish to support the culture camp. (i.e. BBNA, Lake and Pen Borough, Village leadership, Village Corporation leaders, existing culture camp practitioners, etc.)
  • Work with instructors and elders to develop culture camp agenda and curriculum.
  • Develop a culture-camp curriculum for students and parents with the camp instructors and elders.
  • Procure all necessary camp infrastructure and supplies.
  • Plan and deliver all logistics for the implementation of camp
  • Create and manage a recruitment and selection process for students and camp staff.
  • Identify and plan cultural activities to offer to shareholders throughout the year that support the goals of cultural enrichment.

Camp Preparation
  • Coordinate preparation of the selected campsite, including preparation of the site and installation of necessary camp facilities constructed.
  • Identify camp coordinators, cooks, instructors, bear guard and safety, and work with partners in the region to invite elders to participate.
  • Work with BBNC HR to deliver all necessary background checks and drug screenings for all identified camp staff.
  • Ensure compliance with camp safety and health standards
  • Coordinate the inventory, shipping, and delivery of camp equipment, food, and other supplies.
  • In partnership with BBNC Risk Dept, secure proper insurance.
  • Plan and coordinate the budget, daily activities, and menus for camp.
  • Manage the selection process for student applicants.
  • Process and score student applications for camp, select participants and coordinate transportation.
  • Schedule and coordinate camp staff, elders and transportation.
  • Develop camp daily learning activities schedule with locally appropriate subsistence activities, as well as content from culturally relevant curriculum and language instruction.
  • Coordinate other camp attendees and communicate transportation and schedules of activities.
  • Coordinate camp attendee and staff schedules.

Requirements
  • Familiarity with the cultures and peoples of the Bristol Bay region.
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Cultural Studies or closely related field or five years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and implementation; logistics planning and past culture camp experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience working with multiple children in an educational or camp setting.
  • Valid state driver's license
  • Ability to pass drug, driving, and background check.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong knowledge of local tribal culture, traditional values, customs, and language. Native language speaker a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and make decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Strong project management and logistics management skills.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; gather and analyze information skillfully; develop alternative solutions; work well in group-problem solving situations.
  • Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; listen and request clarification; respond well to questions; participate in meetings.
  • Ability to write clearly and informatively; edit work for spelling and grammar; present numerical data effectively; able to read and interpret written information.

Work Environment
  • Most work performed in an office setting. Frequent travel between office and in-region locations.
  • Approximately 3-4 weeks annual travel to rural Alaska at a remote camp site location while camp activities are occurring.
  • Ability to camp in a tent in rural Alaska.
  • During camp activities, working outdoors in both warm, wet, and cold conditions.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry supplies and equipment, typically up to 25-50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods while supervising activities.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions (sun, rain, wind, cold).
  • Ability to travel (often in small aircraft) between camp areas, sometimes over uneven terrain.
  • Ability to participate in camp activities such as setting up tents, moving gear, preparing activity areas, or participating in cultural demonstrations.
  • Sufficient hearing and speaking ability to communicate with staff, participants, and vendors in dynamic outdoor environments.
  • Ability to use standard office equipment for administrative tasks.
  • Ability to work long or irregular hours, especially during camp sessions.
