Job description

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is seeking a Trending and Social Video Producer focused on breaking, trending and highly shareable news — someone who knows how to spot what’s taking off and turn it into compelling social-first video. This journalist knows what people are talking about, spots emerging trends quickly, and turns them into smart, engaging video stories that connect with local audiences.

As part of the visuals team, this producer will report to the Manager for Video and Visual Journalism and collaborate across the newsroom. They should be just as comfortable leading their own video projects as they are partnering with reporters and editors on fast-developing stories.

That may mean appearing on camera to elevate stories from across the newsroom. In other cases, that will mean fully reporting a video story or stitching together user-generated content to tell a compelling story.

What you’ll do:

  • Identify what’s trending locally and nationally to create timely, relevant videos that spark conversation.
  • Produce, shoot, edit, and publish videos in a variety of formats — explainers, man-on-the-street interviews, user-generated content, and field packages.
  • Source and secure rights for trending user-generated videos across social platforms and from third-party partners.
  • Track performance metrics to understand what resonates with our audience and inform future coverage.
  • Publish with SEO and platform best practices to optimize reach and impact.
  • Ensure videos drive engagement, subscriptions, and revenue across Journal Sentinel platforms and social channels.
  • Shift priorities quickly and self-assign based on developing news and audience momentum.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong editorial news judgment and experience working in a digital newsroom.
  • Proven ability to produce compelling short-form video for social and digital platforms (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, X, Facebook).
  • Working knowledge of CMS, livestreaming, video editing, and web analytics.
  • Experience with Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and Photoshop preferred.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, both online and in person.
  • A passion for connecting with audiences through sharp, visual storytelling that reflects what matters most right now.

Application Instructions

We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:

  1. Your resume – one to two pages.
  2. A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.
  3. Links to 3-6 online samples of your work. Show us what you’ve produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.

It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
