How much do calibration engineer jobs pay per hour?
What is a calibration engineer?
A calibration engineer specializes in making fine-tune adjustments to various machine components using diagnostic software. The qualifications for a career as a calibration engineer are a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a Professional Engineer license. You need to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam to earn your initial license, then get relicensed every few years. As a calibration engineer, you need technical knowledge of the machines you service and excellent analytic problem-solving skills to carry out your duties. Your job may focus on diesel fuel engine development, chassis dynamometer testing, or vehicle engine development. You need experience with ETAS - INCA software tools to perform your job. You can find calibration engineers in a variety of industries, but they primarily work for automotive manufacturers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a calibration engineer, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Calibration Engineer vs Test Engineer?
| Aspect | Calibration Engineer | Test Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's in Engineering, certifications in calibration or metrology | Bachelor's in Engineering, certifications in testing or quality assurance |
| Work Environment | Laboratories, manufacturing plants, calibration labs | Testing facilities, R&D labs, production lines |
| Industry Usage | Manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, electronics | Electronics, software, automotive, aerospace |
Calibration Engineers focus on maintaining measurement accuracy by calibrating instruments and equipment, ensuring compliance with standards. Test Engineers design and execute tests to verify product performance and quality. While both roles require technical expertise and work in related environments, Calibration Engineers specialize in calibration processes, whereas Test Engineers focus on testing procedures and validation.

- Develop, modify, and maintain test procedures, work instructions, and SOPs in alignment with applicable engineering and testing standards.
- Partner closely with internal engineering teams (NPI and R&D), agency approvals, and third-party labs to plan and complete product testing prior to production release.
- Solve sophisticated product, instrumentation, and test equipment issues, with a focus on safety, performance, and reliability.
- Ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance of test data within a third-party accredited (ISO 17025) laboratory environment.
- Identify and lead improvements to lab processes, equipment utilization, and test management systems to increase capacity, reduce risk, and control costs.
YOU HAVE:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or equivalent hands-on lab engineering experience supporting R&D or NPI environments.
- 2-3 years of related experience preferred, with strong mechanical and electrical competence and a hands-on approach to testing and problem solving.
- Demonstrated ability to coach, train, and support laboratory technicians, helping them work through sophisticated test setups, equipment issues, and/or data interpretation.
- Strong proficiency in resolving issues related to instrumentation, electronic controls, and/or complex test systems; experience with PLCs, PID controls, or similar systems preferred.
- Understanding of ISO 9001 quality systems; familiarity with ISO 17025 accredited lab environments, test documentation, and calibration requirements preferred.
- Experience developing and following test procedures, standard operating procedures (SOPs), wiring diagrams, and/or troubleshooting documentation; proficiency with test systems software (e.g., LabVIEW), data analysis, and/or equipment calibration preferred.
- Ability to lift, push, and/or pull up to 50 lbs. and stand or sit for extended periods during testing activities.
