What does a cake designer do?

A cake designer is a professional who creates visually appealing and often custom cakes for special occasions such as weddings, birthdays, and corporate events. Their work involves both baking and decorating cakes, using various techniques like fondant sculpting, piping, airbrushing, and hand-painting. Cake designers consult with clients to understand their vision and preferences, then bring those ideas to life in edible form. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong baking skills are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cake designer?

To thrive as a Cake Designer, you need a solid background in baking, cake decorating techniques, and food safety, often supported by culinary training or certifications. Mastery of tools such as fondant smoothers, piping bags, airbrush kits, and familiarity with food-safe coloring systems is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong customer communication are essential soft skills that distinguish exceptional designers. These abilities are crucial for delivering visually stunning, delicious cakes that meet client expectations and maintain high standards of quality and safety.

What are some common challenges cake designers face when working on custom orders?

One of the most common challenges Cake Designers encounter is translating a client's vision into a structurally sound and visually appealing cake, especially when dealing with intricate designs or unconventional themes. Managing time effectively while juggling multiple orders and ensuring each cake meets high standards for both taste and appearance can also be demanding. Additionally, Cake Designers often need to stay updated with the latest trends and techniques in decorating, which requires continuous learning and creativity. Collaborating closely with clients, bakers, and event planners is vital to ensure that every detail, from flavor to decoration, aligns with the client's expectations and event requirements.

To become a cake designer, you typically learn baking and decorating skills through culinary school, online courses, or hands-on experience. Building a portfolio of decorated cakes and gaining experience in a bakery or pastry shop can help establish your skills and attract clients or employers.

Cake Decorator – Baskin-Robbins

Join our team at Baskin-Robbins Kingwood and help make every celebration a little sweeter. We are looking for a dependable, creative, and detail-oriented Cake Decorator who can take ownership of our store's cake program.

This position is responsible not only for decorating cakes, but also for managing customer cake orders, maintaining adequate cake inventory, restocking store freezers, organizing back stock, and helping ensure the store is prepared for everyday demand, holidays, and special occasions.

Both full-time and part-time opportunities may be available, with flexible scheduling.

Role

The Cake Decorator is responsible for producing high-quality decorated cakes that meet Baskin-Robbins standards while helping manage the overall cake inventory and ordering process.

This position requires someone who can work independently, stay organized, manage multiple cake orders and deadlines, maintain proper inventory levels, and provide excellent service to customers placing special orders.

Responsibilities
  • Receive, review, and prepare cake orders placed online, by phone, and in person.
  • Decorate cakes according to Baskin-Robbins standards and customer specifications.
  • Ensure cake orders are completed accurately and ready by the promised pickup time.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of ready-to-sell cakes in store display and storage freezers.
  • Restock cake freezers and ensure products are properly rotated.
  • Monitor and organize cake back stock.
  • Track cakes, icing, decorating supplies, packaging, and other cake-related inventory.
  • Identify products and supplies that need to be reordered and communicate ordering needs to management.
  • Prepare icing, decorating materials, and other supplies necessary for daily production.
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary, and well-organized cake decorating area.
  • Follow food safety, sanitation, labeling, storage, and product-handling procedures.
  • Maintain attractive cake displays that meet Baskin-Robbins merchandising and quality standards.
  • Prepare additional cake inventory for holidays, weekends, promotions, and other high-volume periods.
  • Minimize waste through proper production planning, inventory rotation, and product handling.
  • Communicate professionally with customers regarding cake designs, availability, pickup times, and special requests.
  • Work cooperatively with store management and team members.
  • Assist with other store duties when necessary.
Work Experience
  • Previous cake decorating, bakery, pastry, food preparation, or restaurant experience is preferred.
  • One year or more of cake decorating experience is a plus, but we are willing to consider motivated candidates with strong artistic ability and a willingness to learn.
  • Experience managing inventory, production, or customer orders is beneficial.
  • Baskin-Robbins or similar ice cream cake decorating experience is a plus but is not required.
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Formal culinary, baking, pastry, or cake decorating education is helpful but not required.
  • Equivalent work experience and demonstrated cake decorating ability will also be considered.
Skills and Qualifications

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Strong attention to detail and pride in the quality of their work.
  • Creativity and an eye for presentation and design.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and decorating ability.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple cake orders and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Good inventory-management and planning skills.
  • Dependability and consistent attendance.
  • Strong communication and customer-service skills.
  • Ability to follow recipes, decorating guides, and brand standards.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Ability to work efficiently during busy periods.
  • Willingness to learn new cake designs, decorating techniques, and store procedures.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and assist others when needed.
  • Ability to safely lift, carry, stock, and move cake products and supplies as required.
Why Join Baskin-Robbins Kingwood?

About Baskin-Robbins

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Back in 1945, Burt Baskin and Irv Robbins had a pretty great idea. See, they were big ice cream people. So while every other ice cream shop stuck with vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, they decided to go big. Like, “let’s offer 31 flavors instead” big. Because ice cream should be an every day treat. And the people? Yeah, they loved that. It's safe to say Burt and Irv’s passion made an impact. Fast forward about 75 years, and we’re over 1400 flavors strong. Which is… kinda crazy when you think about it. But the best part is, we’ve got flavors for everyone, for every day, and for every occasion. So, whether your kid’s team finally won a game, you found your left shoe, or you just got out of bed this morning, there's always a yay-worthy scoop ready for you. And we think that's pretty cool. Maybe you learned a new dance trend, finally made your bed, or found the perfect blue sweater. We think every win is worth celebrating. That’s why we do what we do. But, we don’t just stop at ice cream. Sometimes you need a little something extra. Like a Cappuccino Blast® pick-me-up after lunch, a handcrafted sundae in the afternoon, or even a just-because ice cream cake on those days when an ordinary cake just won’t do. No matter what you’re celebrating, we’re here to help you seize the yay.
