What is a CAE simulation engineer?

CAE Simulation Engineers are professionals who use Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) software to simulate and analyze the physical behavior of products and systems before they are built. They apply their knowledge of engineering principles and advanced simulation tools to test various scenarios, such as structural strength, thermal performance, fluid dynamics, and more. The goal is to optimize designs, identify potential issues, and improve product performance while reducing the need for physical prototypes. CAE Simulation Engineers work closely with design and manufacturing teams in industries like automotive, aerospace, and electronics. Their expertise helps companies save time and cost in the product development process.

How does a CAE simulation engineer typically collaborate with design and manufacturing teams during a project?

As a CAE Simulation Engineer, you will work closely with design and manufacturing teams to ensure that virtual prototypes meet performance, safety, and cost requirements. This collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, providing simulation feedback to optimize product designs, and suggesting modifications based on analysis results. You can expect to communicate technical findings, explain complex data in accessible terms, and help troubleshoot issues that arise during the transition from virtual simulation to physical manufacturing. Effective teamwork and clear communication are essential, as your insights directly impact design decisions and project timelines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CAE simulation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CAE Simulation Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical or aerospace engineering, expertise in finite element analysis (FEA), and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with CAE software tools like ANSYS, Abaqus, or HyperMesh, and certifications in simulation methodologies are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret results and collaborate with design teams. These skills ensure accurate simulations and optimization of product designs, which are critical for safety, performance, and cost efficiency.

What is the difference between Cae Simulation Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectCae Simulation EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related engineering; proficiency in CAE softwareBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical or Design Engineering; CAD software skills
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, automotive, aerospace, manufacturing industries; focus on simulation and analysisProduct development, manufacturing, and R&D; focus on creating and testing designs
Industry UsageCommonly used in industries requiring simulation for stress, thermal, and fluid dynamics analysisUsed in industries focused on product design, prototyping, and manufacturing

The main difference between a Cae Simulation Engineer and a Mechanical Design Engineer lies in their focus areas. Cae Simulation Engineers specialize in using simulation software to analyze and predict product performance, while Mechanical Design Engineers focus on creating and developing physical product designs. Both roles require strong engineering credentials and often work within the same industries, but their daily tasks and skill sets differ significantly.

Join our more than 13,000 employees who are inspired every day to deliver exceptional experiences that turn possibility into reality.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Modeling and Simulation Engineer position will provide critical insight to Andersen's engineering teams about how products and materials behave under a variety of applications including multi-body deformation, time-temperature dependent deformations, non-Newtonian fluid dynamics, fluid to solid heat transfer, and fatigue to failure.
Based within Andersen Corporation's Research, Development, and Innovation organization, the primary responsibilities of this position will be to provide advanced simulation services including Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis (NLFEA, FEA, FEM, CAE) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to a variety of teams within the organization. This position will also interface with a team of experimentalists on topics of material characterization and experimental validation of simulation.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with engineers on boundary conditions, material properties, and CAD geometry for setup of simulations.
  • Adjust and debug meshing parameters, boundary conditions, and solver settings to balance accuracy with convergence time.
  • Perform FEA analysis to understand critical product and process performance during the development process.
  • Collaborate with engineers and technicians on model validation using an appropriate real-world experiment.
  • Lead technical discussions regarding simulation results and brainstorm future work.
  • Document simulation results and provide engineering recommendations to internal engineering teams via presentations and written reports.
  • Develop and improve existing simulation techniques with purchase of external software, new code or user subroutines, and automation of virtual workflow.
