Overview
Caddo Parish Animal Services is proud to be the municipal shelter serving Louisiana's third most populous Parish (county). Shreveport, Louisiana is home to approximately 184,000 people while Caddo Parish is home to approximately 240,000 people. Caddo Parish Animal Services is an evolving department with approximately 33 full-time employees and is aided by support networks of volunteers, foster parents and multiple rescue groups nationwide. The mission of Animal Services is to protect both the people and pets of Caddo Parish.
The shelter receives approximately 5,000 homeless pets annually and strives to find appropriate placement for as many as possible. Animal Services staff comprises an enforcement operations team responsible for upholding local/state law in regards to animal welfare, an animal care assistant team that handles the intakes and day-to-day care for shelter animals, a clinic team that handles the medical and surgical aspects, and a communications team, which facilitate reclaims, adoptions, rescue placements and foster arrangements.

Representative Duties
Caddo Parish Animal Services is seeking a staff veterinarian who will ensure shelter pets receive prompt and proper medical care and continued monitoring for individual health and welfare. The veterinarian will assist in the management of medical, and surgical care. The veterinarian will be expected to perform surgeries including, but not limited to, spay and neuter of cats and dogs, as sterilization is a top priority for Animal Services. Representative duties include:
  • Utilizes strong team building skills in working with the shelter staff, particularly whenmaking decisions regarding the housing, placement and care of animals within the shelter.
  • Ensures all animals in care receive prompt and proper medical care and continued monitoringfor individual health and welfare with the assistance of 2 veterinarian assistants.
  • Perform high quality/ high volume spay and neuter surgeries on a daily basis, in addition tomicrochips, vaccinations and other surgical procedures as necessary. Must have willingness to betrained in high quality/ high volume surgeries if not currently in a high-volume setting. Surgeries pertain to adoptions, TNR's and return to owner animals.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough records for each individual animal as well as for the use anddistribution of controlled substance consistent with Federal and State requirements.
  • Provide medical expertise and assistance to the Animal Services Division staff, onsite, in thefield and in court as needed. Training in forensics preferred but not required.
  • Assist with the development of animal care protocols related to the veterinary needs of animals in the shelter's care.
  • Participate in training of other staff and volunteers as needed.
  • Lifts/carries maximum of 50 pounds, stands for long periods of time, walks through kennel section and examines, restrains and treats animals, some of which may be fractious.
  • Position may be called upon during times of parish's emergency activation, may be required to report to work during a period of general emergency.
  • Document body scores and medical observations for cruelty cases.
  • Work typically involves a day shift from 8 am - 5 p.m. as the medical team works Monday - Friday.
  • Client facing services such as participating in community rabies vaccination clinics.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Must possess a Louisiana Veterinary License to Practice.
  • Must possess Federal and State licenses to prescribe drugs, from the Drug Enforcement Agency.

Preferences
  • Experience practicing veterinary medicine in an animal shelter environment.
  • Experience performing high quality/ high volume spay and neuter surgeries.
  • Experience handling/knowledge of small animals, specifically cats, dogs and the occasional gerbil, hamster, rabbits.

Educational Requirements
If your education was obtained in the United States, the County recognizes degrees or diplomas which are accredited by an agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). If you have obtained education from a country other than the United States, your degree or diploma must be evaluated to determine the United States equivalency by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Service (NACES) or the Association of International Credentials Evaluations (AICE) at your expense.
