How much do cable installer jobs pay per hour?
What is the difference between Cable Installer vs Cable Technician?
| Aspect | Cable Installer | Cable Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Certifications | May require a general electrical or telecommunications certification | Often requires similar certifications, plus specialized technical training |
| Work Environment | Installation sites, customer homes, commercial buildings | Installation and troubleshooting in similar environments, with more focus on repairs |
| Job Duties | Installing cables, connecting equipment, setting up systems | Installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining cable systems |
Both roles involve installing and maintaining cable systems, often in similar environments. Cable Technicians typically have more technical skills for troubleshooting and repairs, while Cable Installers focus on the setup and installation process. Certifications and work environments overlap significantly, making these roles closely related but with different emphasis on technical repair skills.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cable installer?
What does a cable installer do?
As a cable installer, your job is to help install, repair, and maintain a wired telecommunication system. As part of building the network, you may wire areas together, use equipment to measure and cut the lengths of cables, and test systems to ensure they are functioning properly. Telecommunication companies that want to run telephone, television, and internet to customers' houses offer most cable installer positions. However, a few cable installer jobs exist in other roles. For example, some cable installers specialize in secure facilities and must go through a rigorous background check. Cable installers typically work in an assigned geographic area throughout the year. Hours are usually regular, but on rare occasions, you may be asked to provide emergency repairs or support for the community.
What are some typical challenges faced by cable installers on the job, and how can they be addressed?

- Collaboration across field operations, subcontractors, and project teams.
What You Bring

- Experience using cable testing and certification tools (Fluke or similar preferred)
- Familiarity with industry standards including BICSI, TIA/EIA, ANSI, or related standards preferred
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to identify issues and implement effective corrective actions

- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities within fast-paced environments
- Ability to provide constructive feedback and support field teams effectively
- Demonstrated professionalism, accountability, and integrity
- Basic computer proficiency including Microsoft Office applications and project documentation systems
