What is a business trainee?

Business Trainees are entry-level professionals who participate in structured programs designed to expose them to various aspects of a company's operations. These programs often include rotations through different departments such as marketing, finance, sales, and human resources. The goal is to provide trainees with a broad understanding of business processes, develop their professional skills, and prepare them for future leadership or specialized roles. Business Trainee programs are commonly offered by large organizations to groom recent graduates or early-career professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a business trainee?

To thrive as a Business Trainee, you typically need a degree in business, economics, or a related field, along with strong analytical and organizational skills. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, data analysis tools, and basic project management software is commonly required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and a willingness to learn help set standout trainees apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for quickly grasping business operations, collaborating effectively, and contributing to organizational goals during the training period.

What types of projects or rotations can a business trainee expect during their program?

Business Trainees typically participate in a structured rotational program, allowing them to gain hands-on experience across various departments such as marketing, finance, operations, and human resources. These rotations are designed to expose trainees to different business functions, helping them understand how each contributes to overall organizational success. This structure not only broadens your skill set but also helps you identify your strengths and preferred career path within the company. Collaboration with multiple teams is common, and you'll likely be assigned to real business projects, gaining practical experience and building your professional network.

What is the difference between Business Trainee vs Business Intern?

Business Interns are usually students or recent graduates seeking hands-on experience through short-term internships. While both roles involve learning and exposure to the business environment, trainees often have a more formalized training structure, whereas interns focus on gaining practical experience.

Is a business trainee a paid job?

Business trainees are often paid positions, especially in structured internship programs, but compensation can vary depending on the company and location. Some trainees may receive stipends or hourly wages, while others might be unpaid or offer academic credit. It is important to check the specific program details before applying.

What is the easiest job to get with a business degree?

Entry-level positions such as administrative assistant, sales associate, or customer service representative are often the easiest to obtain with a business degree. These roles typically require basic communication and organizational skills and may not demand extensive experience or advanced certifications.

Job description

Position:                Trader Trainee
Job Status:            Full Time
Location:               Tualatin, Oregon

 About Buckeye Pacific
At Buckeye Pacific, commodity trading is what we do best. With more than 40 traders based in our Tualatin, Oregon office, we specialize in lumber, crane mats, and millwork—products that keep the building materials industry moving. By analyzing markets, managing risk, and moving large volumes efficiently, we create opportunities for our suppliers and deliver solutions for our customers.

The Role of a Trader
Our traders are more than market movers—they are also experts at building and managing relationships. Success on our floor comes from pairing product and market knowledge with the ability to cultivate strong partnerships. Every trade relies on trust, communication, and long-term connections with suppliers and customers across North America.

The Trader Trainee Program
Our training program is designed to build the next generation of traders. Trainees spend their first nine months on our logistics team, gaining hands-on experience in how products move from mill to market and how value is created at every step. Alongside this experience, you’ll complete a structured training curriculum—learning the markets, products, and strategies that fuel our business. Once training is complete, you’ll begin working with a trading department aligned with your strengths and ready to begin building your own book of business.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Negotiate freight rates and schedule shipments in compliance with transportation laws and regulations.

  • Manage relationships with carriers, brokers, and trading partners to ensure reliable product movement.

  • Build strong relationships across the organization by working closely with traders and support teams.

  • Investigate and resolve shipping issues, claims, or delivery concerns.

  • Provide freight quotes and dispatch updates to traders and business partners.

  • Research potential new accounts and market opportunities.

  • Complete assignments,  projects, and all training sessions within the Trader Training Program.

Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor's Degree from four-year college or university; or Associate’s degree from two-year college plus one year related sales experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Qualifications:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ambitious, driven, and proactive.
  • Strong attention to detail and exceptional accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and solve problems effectively.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to build strong relationships internally and externally.
  • Dependable and comfortable working in an office setting.
  • Interest in sales and trading, with comfort in prospecting, outbound calls, and commission-based roles.

Buckeye offers a competitive base salary and benefits, including company-paid medical, dental, life and disability, as well as a 401(k) plan with an employer match and company stock ownership.
