Job description

The Business Development Manager will promote energy efficiency solutions including, but not limited to, utility incentive programs, energy procurement, energy demand management, utility data analytics, sustainability, and large-scale implementation of measures. Build and manage long-term customer relationships. Prospect new business opportunities and seek out, qualify, and close new sales opportunities within the commercial sector. The Business Development Manager is responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction. Utilizes sales tools to plan and document progress as well as increase business opportunity in accounts. Monitor and manage internal resources to meet client expectations and maximize internal and external value. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1) Go to Market Strategy

  • Develop a strong understanding of Burton Energy Group (BEG) and Willdan’s business objectives, service offerings, and market differentiators.
  • Identify and pursue high-value market opportunities aligned with company growth goals.
  • Collaborate with Burton leadership to develop and execute sales, marketing, and business development strategies.
  • Create client-focused solutions that address operational, financial, and sustainability challenges.

2) Business Development and Execution

  • Build and execute strategies to generate new business and expand relationships with existing clients.
  • Develop ideal client profiles and targeted growth plans for key market segments.
  • Represent BEG and Willdan as a trusted advisor and brand ambassador in the marketplace.
  • Identify, qualify, pursue, and close sales opportunities within the commercial sector.
  • Develop and present proposals, negotiate agreements, and secure new business.
  • Build relationships with stakeholders at all organizational levels, including executive leadership.
  • Collaborate across Willdan business units to identify cross-selling opportunities and strategic partnerships.
  • Manage the proposal and sales process, ensuring responsiveness to client needs and effective internal coordination.
  • Utilize CRM and sales tools to track opportunities, forecast business, and drive account growth.

3) Team Leadership and Collaboration

  • Partner with engineering and operational teams to deliver value-driven solutions and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Effectively allocate internal resources to support business development efforts and client needs.
  • Foster collaboration across Burton leadership and functional teams to achieve growth objectives.

4) Integration into Parent Company

  • Serve as the client advocate within BEG and Willdan, ensuring customers receive maximum value from company services.
  • Support integration and collaboration with Willdan teams and processes.

Job Requirements / Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, or a related field required.
  • Minimum seven (7) years of business development or sales experience in the commercial energy efficiency industry.
  • Proven success selling energy efficiency solutions, utility incentive programs, energy procurement services, energy audits, or large-scale implementation projects.
  • Strong track record of identifying opportunities, developing client relationships, and closing new business.
  • Experience with data centers, industrial clients, and/or large national accounts preferred.
  • Strong written, verbal, presentation, and proposal-development skills.
  • Entrepreneurial, results-oriented, and highly motivated with strong business acumen.
  • Ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders from executive leadership through operational teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality results.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and CRM platforms.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% as business needs require.
