Job description

Controller
Location: Houston, TX (77079)
Employment Type: Full-Time
Industry: Oil & Gas / Energy / Construction / Industrial Services
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead the accounting and financial operations of a growing company within the oil & gas, energy, construction, or industrial services industries.
The Controller will play a key leadership role overseeing the accounting function, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, managing the month-end and year-end close processes, and partnering with executive leadership and operations to drive financial performance.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting leader who can operate strategically while remaining close enough to the details to understand what's happening within the business. Experience in a project-based, operational, field-services, or asset-intensive environment is highly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and oversee all day-to-day accounting and financial operations
  • Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation of financial statements and management reporting
  • Establish and maintain strong internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures
  • Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, and reconciliations
  • Review and approve journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and account analyses
  • Analyze financial results and provide meaningful insight into business performance
  • Prepare and present financial reporting and analysis to executive leadership
  • Partner with operations and business leaders on budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
  • Oversee project accounting, job costing, revenue recognition, and cost accounting activities as applicable
  • Monitor project and operational performance, margins, and key financial metrics
  • Manage cash flow, working capital, and overall financial controls
  • Coordinate and manage relationships with external auditors, tax professionals, banking partners, and other financial service providers
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable accounting, tax, and regulatory requirements
  • Support annual audits, tax filings, insurance audits, and other external reporting requirements
  • Lead accounting process improvements and identify opportunities to increase efficiency and automation
  • Evaluate and improve accounting systems, reporting tools, and ERP processes
  • Assist with acquisitions, integrations, system implementations, and other strategic initiatives as needed
  • Hire, develop, coach, and manage accounting team members
  • Establish performance expectations and create a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
  • Serve as a trusted financial partner to the executive leadership team

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
  • 7-12+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience
  • Prior Controller, Assistant Controller, or significant accounting leadership experience
  • Experience in oil & gas, energy, construction, engineering, industrial services, manufacturing, or a related industry strongly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting
  • Proven experience leading month-end and year-end close processes
  • Strong general ledger, financial reporting, and account reconciliation experience
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial analysis
  • Experience managing and developing accounting professionals
  • Strong Excel and financial analysis skills
  • Experience with an ERP/accounting system such as SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, Sage Intacct, or similar
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • Strong business acumen and ability to communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and operate effectively in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Industry Experience
Candidates with experience in any of the following environments are encouraged to apply:
  • Oil & Gas
  • Energy Services
  • Oilfield Services
  • Midstream / Downstream
  • Engineering & Construction
  • Commercial Construction
  • Industrial Services
  • Manufacturing
  • Infrastructure
  • EPC / EPCM
  • Field Services

Highly Desired Experience
Particularly strong candidates may have experience with:
  • Project accounting and job costing
  • Revenue recognition
  • Work-in-progress (WIP) accounting
  • Percentage-of-completion accounting
  • Cost accounting
  • Multi-entity accounting
  • Consolidations
  • Cash flow forecasting
  • Inventory and fixed assets
  • Internal controls and process improvement
  • ERP implementations or upgrades
  • M&A integration
  • Banking relationships and treasury
  • Private equity-backed or high-growth environments

What We're Looking For
We're looking for a Controller who is both strategic and hands-on-someone who can lead the accounting function but isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves and dig into the numbers when necessary.
The right person will be comfortable partnering with executives and operations leaders, explaining financial results in plain English, identifying issues before they become problems, and helping the business make better decisions.
Experience in a project-based, operational, or field-services environment is a major plus, particularly for candidates who understand the financial impact of project margins, labor, materials, job costs, revenue, and cash flow.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accounting leader who wants to have a meaningful impact on the business and serve as a key member of the leadership team.
If you're an experienced Controller looking for an opportunity to lead, build, and make an impact, we'd love to hear from you!
