School Bus Fleet Mechanic

This posting is for positions supporting North Branch Area Schools. As a member of our transportation maintenance team, you will play a vital role in keeping students safe by ensuring the buses serving our district are dependable and road-ready. SUMMARY OF POSITION

Perform as a fleet technician which involves all areas of vehicle maintenance that may include any of the following based on the specific job and Dean operation site assigned: diagnosis and repair on school buses, motor coaches, pickup trucks, passenger vans, cars, tractors, and/or forklifts owned by the company.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
  • Meet all general qualifications for employment.
  • Meet State and/or ASE requirements for appropriate mechanic licensing.
  • Meet State and/or Federal physical examination requirements.
  • Pass drug and alcohol screening as established by Company, State and Federal requirements.
  • Meet Company, State, and School District standards (where applicable) for criminal history check.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs repairs as needed in accordance with OEM manufacturer's recommendations and State and Federal regulations. Inspects equipment for defects, determines root causes and completes repairs for appropriate correction to defects found. Uses full understanding of preventative maintenance inspection and repair processes to include but not limited to, diesel and gas engines, air and hydraulic braking systems, suspension systems, drivetrain assemblies, automatic transmissions, differentials, hydraulic lift systems, electrical systems and body assemblies.
  • Answers service calls and responds to breakdowns; conducts on-site repairs when possible.
  • May install accessories such as two-way radios, cameras and GPS systems.
  • Reviews technical service bulletins, vehicle maintenance diagnostic links, online electrical diagrams, has adequate understating /operational use of diagnostic software for diesel and gas engines, braking systems, etc.
  • Parts procurement and inventory control.
  • Communicates with bus drivers, operations staff and other Fleet technicians regarding maintenance difficulties and/or advises or assists as necessary.
  • Performs safety inspections; assists with annual Michigan State Police inspections.
  • Appropriate housekeeping of maintenance facility to include but not limited to: emptying trash, sweeping and mopping floors in work areas including restroom/locker room areas.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Vehicle maintenance experience required; diesel bus/truck or automotive maintenance preferred.
  • Technical School degree in diesel/automotive preferred but not required, with 3 to 5 years of vehicle maintenance experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform this job.
  • Must hold or be able to obtain (once hired) current Mechanic Licenses through ASE or the State of Michigan in the following areas: Heavy Duty Brakes, Heavy Duty Suspension and Steering, Heavy Duty Diesel Engines, Heavy Duty Drive Train, Electrical.
  • May also be required to be certified in Computer Electronic Engine and Transmission Diagnostics.
ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS (WHERE APPLICABLE)
  • Where serving as the sole technician for a Dean operation, technician must have an excellent driving record, a minimum of five years' driving experience, a valid Michigan driver's license and hold or be able to obtain (once hired) a valid Michigan Class B Commercial Driver's License with School Bus (S) and Passenger (P) endorsements and no air brake restriction.
  • Some Dean operations may require technician to function as a substitute school bus driver if circumstances ever require additional drivers to transport students.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to physically perform duties and or utilize the following equipment with or without accommodation: Operate a variety of diesel and automotive equipment and diagnostic software, mechanics tools not limited to, air/electrical tools, hand tools, welder, A/C equipment, vehicle lifts, wheel dollies, brake job and various other tasks.
  • Must be able to use body members to work; lift, push, pull, move or carry heavy objects or materials.
  • Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 35 to 50 pounds of force frequently. Must be able to lift and/or carry weight of 50 to 100 pounds.
