Job description

The School Bus Aide position supports the safety of our riders. The primary responsibility of this position is for the safety of the passengers being transported, while ensuring the Bus Driver has minimal distractions from their primary responsibility of driving. The qualified candidates must have a passion for children and be able to communicate effectively with teachers, peers, parents, and children.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Safely assists during the transportation of students and/or other authorized passengers per assigned time schedule, route, and bus assignment. Assists the Bus Driver in ensuring the transportation of only authorized passengers and during discharges at authorized stops per the route plan.
  • Ensures the safety and well-being of children being transported to and from program and on field trips used by the program, including but not limited to:
    • Helping children board the bus safely
    • Assuring that the bus driver is not distracted from the safe operation of the vehicle;
    • Helping children safely get off the bus and into the custody of those individuals authorized to receive them; and
    • Retrieving any fallen objects during the bus ride.
  • Follows and ensures any mandated child restraint device procedures, ensuring children are properly positioned and restrained.
  • Provides quality customer service and communicates safety requirements to all passengers. Makes decisions in a variety of situations regarding priorities and effectively handling emergencies.
  • Addresses passenger misconduct immediately to ensure the safety of all passengers while maintaining professionalism. Reports misconduct to Terminal Manager and completes misconduct reportprior to completing the shift.
  • Reports delays, accidents, and maintenance needs. Must be flexible to deal with work schedule changes such as traffic delays, flat tire, or other unexpected events.
  • In the event of an accident or emergency, assures the safe evacuation of children and adult passengers and assists in assuring that all passengers receive assistance.
  • Assists in maintenance of the interior of the vehicle to ensure a clean and safe operating condition.
  • Observes safety and security procedures; reports unsafe conditions and/or driver traffic violations to management team. Demonstrates a commitment to company safety and risk management efforts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
