Job description

Job Title: HVAC Technician – Diesel Double-Decker Buses
Location: New York, NY
Job Type: Full-Time
Reports To: Fleet Manager/Director of Maintenance
Compensation: $25-$30/hr

Position Summary:

We are seeking a skilled and reliable HVAC Technician to join our fleet maintenance team. The candidate will specialize in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems specifically on Vanhool diesel-powered double-decker buses. This position plays a critical role in ensuring passenger comfort and system reliability across our bus fleet.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain HVAC systems on Vanhool double-decker buses.

  • Perform regular preventative maintenance on HVAC systems, compressors, evaporators, and blowers.

  • Work with both rooftop and underfloor-mounted HVAC units specific to multi-level buses.

  • Troubleshoot electrical and electronic HVAC control systems using diagnostic tools.

  • Recover, recharge, and handle refrigerants in compliance with EPA standards.

  • Maintain accurate service records and report all work performed.

  • Collaborate with other mechanics and technicians on broader bus maintenance tasks when needed.

  • Ensure HVAC work meets all safety and compliance regulations.

  • Respond to road calls and service interruptions related to climate control systems.

  • Maintain inventory of HVAC-related parts and tools.

Requirements:
  • Vocational or technical training in HVAC systems preferred.

  • 3+ years of HVAC technician experience, preferably in commercial vehicle or heavy-duty transport applications.

  • Experience working with R134a and/or R1234yf refrigerants.

  • EPA Section 608 Certification (Type II or Universal) required.

  • Knowledge of diesel engine systems and bus electrical wiring schematics a plus.

  • Valid driver's license, CDL not required.

  • Ability to work in confined spaces and on elevated platforms.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs and work in various weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience servicing HVAC on transit, coach, or double-decker buses.

  • Familiarity with brands like Carrier, Thermo King, Valeo, or Spheros.

Work Schedule:
