JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Bus Driver

Terms of Employment: Contracted 185 Day Position

Evaluated By: Director of Transportation

Job Summary

Provide safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school and elsewhere as needed to support the educational experience

Employment Requirements

• 21 years of age or older

• High School Diploma or GED required; advanced education desirable

• Valid Class B CDL with “S” endorsement; standard certificate (yellow card)

• Strong communication skills, organized, detail oriented

• Must be able to meet physical requirements of the job

Classified Employee Confidentiality Statement

As an employee of the Huntington County Community School Corporation, some job duties may involve access to information/records that are considered confidential. Employees of the school corporation respect the confidentiality of the student and follow procedures to protect privacy.

Essential Job Duties

• Obeys all provisions of the Indiana statues, and the rules and regulations of the State School Bus Committee pertaining to safety in the operation of school buses and the transportation of school children

• Must have a full understanding and will adhere to the policies outlined in the Transportation Handbook

• Each day during the school year, the Driver will operate his/her assigned bus over the routes scheduled by the Director of Transportation, maintaining the time schedule.

• The Driver will pick up and discharge only authorized students from approved bus stops.

• The Driver will notify the Director of Transportation within 24 hours when new stops or changes in the routes are needed for maintenance of safety or efficiency.

• The Driver will keep order and maintain discipline among the students while in their charge.

• The Driver will document and report to the proper authorities when help is needed for undisciplined children.

• The Driver will keep the school bus clean inside and out.

• The Driver will check the school bus before and after each operation and will report to the Director of Transportation when the school bus is not operating in a sound condition.

• The Driver will report all accidents.

• The Driver will complete the Annual State Safety Meeting and other meetings as required by the Director of Transportation.

• The Driver will maintain a means of being contacted by school officials in the event of an emergency situation during the school day.

• The Driver will provide the Director of Transportation with all physicals and license documentation as to prove their certification to legally drive a school bus in the State of Indiana.

• Use independent judgment and initiative in making sound decisions and in developing solutions to problems.

• Discreetly handle confidential and politically sensitive matters.

• Make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.

• Tactfully and courteously respond to requests and inquiries/complaints from the general public and staff.

• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.

• Follow instructions and take direction.

Physical Factors(Occasionally = 0-2.5 hrs./day; Frequently = 2.5-5.5 hrs./day; Constantly = 5.5+ hrs./day)

• Meet or exceed the medical requirements of the State of Indiana as stated by IC-20-27-8-1, Section 1a.

• Physical requirements include the possession and full normal use of both hands, both feet, both legs, both eyes and both ears; ability to walk freely up and down the bus aisle; ability to reach and bend; sufficient strength to assist a small child; ability to assist students in an emergency evacuation; ability to exit bus via emergency exits if necessary
