Job Title: Head Start Bus Driver
Department: Transportation – Community Action Transportation Services Program
Reports To: Head Start Director
Supervises: N/A
Pay Grade: $18.50 – $20.50/hour
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Locations: Batavia, Albion, Medina
Status: Part-Time, 30 hours per week-Benefits Eligible
Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 6:30 AM – 9:30 AM & 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

I. Purpose and Summary of Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the Head Start Bus Driver is to safely transport children to and from Head Start program sites. The Bus Driver must comply with all applicable regulations (e.g., NYS Department of Transportation, Department of Motor Vehicles, NYS Office of Children and Family Services) and respond to the evolving needs of the Community Action Transportation Services Program.

II. Essential Responsibilities
Transport Responsibilities:
• Transport children safely and professionally to and from designated destinations.
• Provide direction to bus monitors when needed.
• Ensure the bus is safe and operable by performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections, fueling, cleaning, and reporting maintenance needs.
Safety and Emergency Handling:
• Instruct children on bus safety, including evacuation drills, seat belt use, and proper riding behavior.
• Manage emergencies (e.g., accidents, breakdowns, illness) calmly and professionally.
Support for Events:
• Provide transportation for field trips, parent meetings, policy council, home-based playgroups, and other events as directed by the Head Start Director.
Documentation and Reporting:
• Complete required documentation including attendance records, driver trip sheets, bus logs, and other agency-mandated forms.
• Periodically review documentation from other Drivers.
• Report any physical, behavioral, or emotional concerns about children to the Site Specialist.
Meetings and Professional Development:
• Attend all transportation, center, and agency-wide staff meetings.
• Complete defensive driving and biennial road/written tests.
• Participate in refresher courses and all required trainings.
• Ensure compliance with funder and regulatory training requirements.
Confidentiality and Compliance:
• Maintain confidentiality of all agency and client information.
• Abide by all safety rules, including prohibitions on smoking, eating, drinking, cellphone, and headphone use while operating the vehicle.
Marginal Responsibilities:
• Participate in optional trainings or meetings as directed.
• Assist in the classroom when requested.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
