Job description

Summary:
Maintain agency vehicles according to agency and NYS Department of Transportation regulations and manufacturer specifications. Perform road calls for agency vehicles, as required. Monitor maintenance schedules as required by the Head Mechanic.
Essential Functions:
  • Maintain and repair vehicles in a safe manner in accordance with NYS DOT regulations, manufacturer specifications and agency requirements under the supervision of the Transportation Manager.
  • Flexibility with work hours required.
  • Review driver inspection sheets on a daily basis and take appropriate action
  • Evaluate vehicle repairs and make recommendations to Head Mechanic. Must have an ability to work with outside repair vendors.
  • Initiate paper work for parts and supplies that will enable the proper maintenance of inventory.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Ensure that agency equipment (i.e. air compressor, tire machine, etc) is maintained and in good working order.
  • Perform all driving duties according to 19A and agency requirements and maintaining a Class C CDL license with P endorsement.
  • Perform road calls on agency vehicles.
  • Serve as on-call mechanic when assigned by Head Mechanic. This will include carrying and answering the on-call cell phone and being available on a 24 hour a day basis.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be able to meet all 19 A requirements.
  • Minimum 2 years experience as a working mechanic or education equivalent. Experience with all models of vehicles. Must have own mechanics tool set and have the ability to participate with the on-call roster.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of Vehicle Traffic Laws which would include: safe driving skills as determined by the 19A Certified Examiner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to pass NYS SED Bus Driver Physical Performance Test, which includes a 125 lb weigh drag and agility tests related to entering and exiting a bus and driving a vehicle.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 100 Lbs

Working Conditions:
  • Our operation runs in all weather conditions. Mechanics are expected to be able to drive and attend to road calls in all conditions. Additionally, mechanics may be required to assist with snow removal after large storms.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid NYS driver's license
  • Must obtain a Commercial license-CDL Class C with passenger and School Bus endorsement within six months hire.
  • Must be able to meet requirements of Article 19-A.
  • Subject to pre-hire, return to duty, accident, reasonable suspicion and random Drug Testing per FMCSA, SED, USDOT and NYSDOT regulations
