Job description

FACILITIES ASSISTANT

Part-Time | Non-Exempt

Reports to: Assistant Director of Building Operations

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain facility components of structural, grounds keeping, janitorial, mechanical, utilities and equipment; execute day-to-day support of building, program and staff needs; assist with the supervision of volunteers.
  2. Maintain cleanliness and perform minor repairs inside/outside the building; serve as Library liaison to cleaning and other contractors; assist with recycling, materials handling and procurement.
  3. Facilitate set-up/take-down/basic IT troubleshooting of meeting rooms and A/V equipment (i.e. laptops, projector, screen, microphones, etc.) for various in-house and public programs; maintain flexibility in work schedule to accommodate events held outside of normal Library hours.
  4. Assist in all areas of building, grounds and equipment maintenance for security and potential safety issues; including snow and ice removal from walkways.
  5. Enforce Library policies relevant to public use; respond to emergencies and provide support, as needed; act quickly, exercising good judgment; maintain security during open hours and for before/after hours' events.

Other Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with scheduling of routine and other maintenance, repairs and cleaning; assist in overseeing contracted work and various projects.
  2. Use Library vehicle to run various errands; assist in tracking vehicle maintenance.
  3. Follow detailed instructions, work independently without close supervision and assume responsibility.
  4. Communicate effectively with patrons, co-workers and professional colleagues.
  5. Work positively and collaboratively across departments to accomplish departmental and Library goals.
  6. Foster and promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and the community.
  7. Adapt and respond to multiple priorities, interruptions and demands; resolve problems in a positive manner.
  8. Seek professional continuing education, both organized and casual, with a commitment to keeping services current and appropriate for patrons.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Facilities maintenance experience preferred.
  3. Certification in electrical, plumbing and/or carpentry preferred.
  4. Experience with irrigation systems, HVAC and boiler systems preferred.
  5. Proficient in MS Office, Google Workspace, internet browsers and other computer related technologies.
  6. Experience with web-based help desk ticket and event/room management software preferred.
  7. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  8. Dedication to public service and providing excellent customer service.
  9. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to organize work, set priorities and manage projects to completion.
  10. Enthusiastic, positive, friendly, self-motivated, creative and approachable.
  11. Strong obligation to confidentiality.
  12. Ability to speak multiple languages helpful.
  13. May require a valid Michigan driver's license based on assignment.

Working Environment:

  1. May be required to: sit, stand, bend, stoop, crouch, reach, kneel and/or walk for extended periods of time; carry books, boxes of books or objects weighing up to 50 pounds; push or pull wheeled carts with a total weight of up to 500 pounds; operate assigned equipment; pick up litter; spread ice melt; use the telephone, keyboard, computer mouse.
  2. Ability to climb ladder heights up to 35 feet and use indoor/outdoor power tools and equipment.
  3. Ability to work outdoors for prolonged periods of time in all weather conditions; noisy and potentially hazardous environments with electricity, dust, debris and chemicals.
  4. Evening, weekend and some holiday hours are required.
  5. This position requires the employee to be on site at the Library and does not offer any remote work opportunities.

Hours: This is a year-round, part-time position with permanent shifts on the following days at these set times. Candidates must be available to work the shifts as posted.

20 hours per week

  • Alternating Sundays 9am - 6pm / Tuesdays 12:30pm - 9pm
  • Mondays 11am - 4pm
  • Wednesdays 2pm - 9pm

Wage: $18.48

Benefits: Time benefits are earned beginning on the date of hire and include personal business time (24 hours annually), sick time (4 hours per month), vacation time (4 hours per month to start, increasing based on years of service) and 12 paid Holidays per year. The first month of time benefits will be prorated based on the date of hire. Medical and dental insurance are not offered with this position.
