Job description

Assistant Operations Manager – Relocation Available

Join Alter Trading, a leader in metals recycling for over 127+ years. We’re hiring an Assistant Operations Manager to support our auto shredder facility in Waterloo, IA. This hands-on leadership role is ideal for those with experience in heavy equipment, industrial operations, or scrap/recycling environments.  This position is designed to support our long-term talent strategy by building regional bench strength and offering continued growth opportunities. While a willingness to relocate in the future is preferred, we are open to strong candidates who are motivated to develop, take on more responsibility, and pursue broader opportunities down the road.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support daily facility operations and assist the Facility Manager with compliance, safety, and production goals.
  • Analyze operational data to resolve quality or production issues.
  • Lead and develop training programs for operational staff.
  • Oversee monthly operational budgets and help manage equipment/parts inventory.
  • Serve as backup to Facility Manager when needed.
  • Ensure product standards meet steel mill requirements and customer expectations.
  • Engage with commercial and peddler customers to support business growth.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in metal recycling including Non Ferrous, preferred. 
  • 3–5 years of supervisory experience in industrial, recycling, or heavy equipment environments.
  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems is a plus.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills; willingness to work outdoors in all weather.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Preferred Experience: Background in non-ferrous (NF) and ferrous metals, scrap, shredders, supervisory or leadership roles, or operations/team lead/manager positions  
  • Ability to relocate in the future, strongly preferred
