Job description

Consolidated Engineering Laboratories (CEL) is a leader in providing quality materials testing and construction inspection services. CEL is a union firm with its corporate headquarters located in San Ramon, CA and has full-service facilities in Northern California, Hawaii, and Utah.

We are seeking a Special Inspector (INS1) to join our Salt Lake City, UT team! Come join us!

The Construction Inspector will perform inspections and testing on construction projects to ensure compliance with approved plans, project specifications, and applicable building codes. This role involves working closely with contractors, engineers, and project managers to verify that structural components and materials are installed according to industry standards and regulatory requirements.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform special inspections in accordance with project specifications and applicable building codes.

  • Inspect structural elements such as reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry, soils, and foundations.

  • Verify construction materials, installation methods, and workmanship meet project requirements.

  • Review construction documents, structural drawings, and inspection requirements prior to site visits.

  • Document inspection activities and prepare detailed daily inspection reports.

  • Identify deficiencies or non-compliant work and communicate findings to contractors, engineers, and project managers.

  • Maintain accurate records and ensure documentation meets regulatory requirements.

Minimum requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Prefer candidate with 2+ years experience in the testing and inspection industry.

  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and engineering reports.

  • Valid drivers license.

Technical requirements:

  • ICC Special Inspector Certification(s) - Reinforced Concrete or Structural Masonry preferred.

  • Strong written and verbal communication.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple inspection assignments.

  • Ability to pay attention to detail and good observational skills.

  • Solid understanding of the construction and testing and inspection industries.

Other miscellaneous qualities:

  • Ability to travel - Less than 5%

  • Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and access elevated work sites.

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Ability to occasionally work evening or night shifts.
