What is a Building Envelope Internship?

A Building Envelope Internship is a temporary position, usually for students or recent graduates, that provides hands-on experience in the design, analysis, and evaluation of building envelopes—the physical barriers between the interior and exterior of a structure, such as walls, roofs, windows, and doors. Interns typically assist with tasks like field inspections, material testing, report writing, and CAD drafting under the supervision of experienced engineers or architects. This role helps interns understand how different materials and construction techniques impact energy efficiency, moisture control, and building durability. It's an excellent opportunity for those interested in building science, architecture, or civil engineering to gain practical skills and industry knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Building Envelope Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Building Envelope Intern, you need a solid understanding of architectural principles, construction materials, and basic engineering concepts, typically supported by coursework in civil or architectural engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, building modeling programs like Revit, and basic testing equipment is often required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and a willingness to learn on-site are crucial soft skills. These capabilities ensure accurate project documentation, effective teamwork, and a foundational understanding of building envelope performance and integrity.

What is the difference between Building Envelope Internship vs Building Envelope Technician?

Internships are ideal for students, whereas technicians are experienced professionals working in the field.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a Building Envelope Internship?

During a Building Envelope Internship, you'll typically assist with tasks such as site inspections, material testing, and drafting technical reports related to building envelope systems like roofing, waterproofing, and cladding. Interns often collaborate with engineers and architects to assess building performance, investigate issues like leaks or energy loss, and help develop solutions. This hands-on experience provides exposure to both fieldwork and office-based analysis, offering a well-rounded understanding of building envelope consulting. You'll also gain valuable insight into industry best practices and the opportunity to network with professionals in the field.

You’ll work closely with project teams, consultants, and trade partners to review design documents, manage inspections, and ensure work meets our high standards. Your expertise will also support investigations, testing, and continuous improvement across projects.

If you have hands-on experience with these systems and a passion for building better, we’d love to connect.

  • Critical evaluation of building envelope performance, including its design and construction.
  • Providing design-assist services related to enclosure systems including commenting on the appropriate use and selection of materials and details.
  • Conduct investigations and repair of existing failing building enclosure systems.

  • Develop and ensure protection of finished systems.
  • Organizing field data to facilitate analysis and problem solving
  • Perform Root Cause Analysis reporting for high tier quality failure issues. Provide solutions to correct failed systems.
