About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Code Consultant to join our growing Building Code & Fire/Life Safety team in Toronto. This role is ideal for a professional with a strong understanding of the Ontario Building Code (OBC), National Building Code of Canada (NBCC), and building regulatory requirements who enjoys working with architects, engineers, developers, and authorities having jurisdiction to deliver code-compliant design solutions.

You will provide technical expertise throughout all stages of project development, helping clients navigate complex building code requirements across a wide variety of commercial, residential, institutional, and mixed-use developments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform building code analysis and prepare detailed code compliance reports.

  • Interpret and apply the Ontario Building Code, National Building Code of Canada, and applicable standards.

  • Advise project teams on code compliance strategies during planning, design, and construction.

  • Review architectural and engineering drawings for code compliance.

  • Participate in meetings with architects, developers, engineers, municipalities, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).

  • Conduct occupant load, exiting, fire separation, barrier-free design, and spatial separation reviews.

  • Provide alternative solution assessments and performance-based code evaluations where applicable.

  • Support permit submissions and respond to plan review comments.

  • Stay current with changes to building codes, regulations, and industry best practices.

  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to technical knowledge sharing within the team.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in building code consulting, building regulations, or a related discipline within the building industry.

  • Strong knowledge of the Ontario Building Code (OBC) and National Building Code of Canada (NBCC).

  • Experience working on commercial, residential, institutional, healthcare, industrial, or mixed-use building projects.

  • Ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings.

  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification such as CBCO, BCIN, CBO, or equivalent is considered an asset.

  • Experience with alternative solutions, fire and life safety consulting, or performance-based design.

  • Previous consulting engineering or code consulting experience is highly desirable.
