Job description

About this Role:
This STEM Fellow - Computer Science Pathway will play a critical role in supporting Heights students and programming at George Washington HS. The Fellow will work closely with the Manager and Director of Career Pathways, GWHS Computer Science teacher(s), and Heights staff at George Washington HS to support student success and motivation in CS and related areas, especially in the school’s new AP Computer Science A class.
We are seeking a Fellow to work from early October - early May.
Weekly Schedule: 4-6 hours/week, with a weekly block at George Washington HS including at least 11:00am - 1:15pm, alternating between 2 days based on school’s block schedule
You’ll help us to achieve:
Improved achievement and preparation for Computer Science and related STEM majors and careers among students from underinvested Philadelphia communities
You’ll be responsible for:
  • Providing academic support and encouragement to students in AP Computer Science A class, and other Heights GWHS Computer Science pathway students
  • Talking with and encouraging students about their STEM-related career and college interests, especially as it relates to opportunities they can pursue while in high school
  • Supporting Heights Computer Science Pathway student coaching/ advising
  • Supporting or facilitating Computer Science-related workshops and their coordination
  • Attending bi-weekly STEM Pathways team meetings
  • Supporting summer program recruitment
  • Supporting and inspiring students to study/pursue STEM!
  • Helping to secure class or program rosters as needed, working with Heights staff to ensure necessary data is gathered and recorded for programming
About you:
  • Pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Computer or Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM field
  • Prior tutoring, teaching, mentoring, or related experience
  • Familiarity and experience with local schools and communities (preferred)
  • Familiarity with Heights / Penn BLI - Comp Sci curriculum materials (preferred)
  • Able to travel to/from George Washington HS (Northeast Phila.)
  • Enthusiastic, engaging, empathic, flexible
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Personal and/or professional background related to understanding the experience of our Black, Latino, and first-generation scholars
Heights employees:
  • Must meet expectations to report in-person on a schedule determined by their direct manager and/or the Vice President of the team.
  • Must meet PA State background check requirements [PA Criminal, PA Child Abuse and FBI Fingerprint Check] at hire and every five years thereafter.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States and complete an I-9 employment verification form.
  • Strong orientation to customer service, particularly with regard to students, partners and colleagues
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Office and related applications, as well as use of general office equipment (phones, computers, copiers, etc)
  • Fluency in the use of data and data systems. Maintains appropriate engagement with data entry, reporting and review.
  • Must adhere to COVID safety guidelines as established by Heights and/or its partners.
  • All staff should be mindful of the organization’s strong recommendation that everyone maintains an up to date with COVID vaccination and boosters.
  • Must be able to work in a busy, often complex work environment that is generally climate controlled.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds unassisted on an occasional basis.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
