What does a broadcast engineer do?

A broadcast engineer performs a variety of technical support duties at a radio or television station. Their responsibilities are to maintain broadcast systems and equipment, troubleshoot and repair equipment, and set up broadcasts for live events, such as the news, concerts, or athletic contests. Other responsibilities of a broadcast engineer are to ensure that systems are set up appropriately to provide consistent sound and video quality. A broadcast engineer often has a more supervisory role, training and overseeing other technicians. The qualifications you need to become a broadcast engineer typically include an associate’s or bachelor’s degree.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a broadcast engineer?

To thrive as a Broadcast Engineer, you need strong technical knowledge of audio and video systems, signal flow, and a background in electronics or broadcast technology, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with broadcast automation software, digital editing tools, IP-based transmission systems, and relevant FCC regulations is essential. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and communication skills help you manage live broadcasts and troubleshoot under pressure. These abilities are vital for ensuring reliable, high-quality broadcast operations and minimizing disruptions in fast-paced media environments.

What are some common challenges faced by broadcast engineers during live event coverage?

Broadcast Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing unexpected technical failures, ensuring reliable transmission signals, and adapting to rapidly changing production requirements during live events. Quick troubleshooting skills and the ability to work under pressure are essential, as any downtime can disrupt the broadcast. Collaboration with production teams, camera operators, and IT staff is frequent, making strong communication skills valuable for resolving issues efficiently and maintaining seamless broadcasts.

What is the difference between Broadcast Engineer vs Broadcast Technician?

AspectBroadcast EngineerBroadcast Technician

Job description

Fox Corporation is seeking a Director, Software Engineering & Media Automation to join our Direct to Consumer Platforms team. Our platform is the foundation of all Fox brands and their digital Web/Mobile/OTT properties - powering marquee events like the Super Bowl, World Series, FIFA Men's World Cup, national elections, and breaking news.

This is a leadership role at the intersection of AI, media technology, and platform engineering. You will build and lead a team that designs agentic AI systems, spec-driven automation architectures, and next-generation developer tooling for broadcast, streaming, and media asset management. You will shape how Fox's engineering organization harnesses AI - not just as a productivity aid, but as a core capability that transforms how media software is built, tested, and operated.

Snapshot of Your Responsibilities AI & Agentic Systems
  • Architect and build spec-driven automation frameworks tailored to media workflows - including MAM, content ingest, transcoding pipelines, broadcast operations, and live streaming infrastructure.
  • Define and own AI software engineering roadmap for media and broadcast automation, evolving the organization's capabilities from AI-assisted development toward fully autonomous, agent-driven workflows.
  • Evaluate and adopt emerging AI tools, models, and frameworks (e.g., Claude, OpenAI, open-source agents) and drive their integration into real-world media production and delivery systems.
  • Collaborate with product, editorial, and broadcast operations teams to identify high-value automation opportunities and translate them into scalable AI-powered services.
Engineering Leadership & People Management
  • Lead, grow, and directly manage a team of engineers across multiple career levels - setting clear expectations, conducting regular 1:1s, managing performance, hiring and org design decisions.
  • Build a high-performing team culture that balances technical excellence with speed, experimentation, and psychological safety.
  • Serve as a technical bar-raiser for the broader organization - participating in design reviews, architecture refinements, and senior engineering interviews.
  • Mentor engineers at all levels, helping them grow into senior and staff-level roles through structured feedback, sponsorship, and development planning.
Platform Engineering & Developer Productivity
  • Design and continuously improve CI/CD pipelines to accelerate software delivery, reduce build times, and increase deployment reliability across Fox's media platform portfolio.
  • Own the administration, governance, and roadmap for enterprise source control and build systems (e.g., GitHub Enterprise, GitHub Actions, GitHub Packages).
  • Champion and integrate AI-powered developer tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) into engineering workflows to enhance velocity, code quality, and security.
  • Partner with QA and engineering teams to build and refine test automation frameworks for media, broadcast, and streaming services.
  • Implement and enforce security best practices across CI/CD pipelines, including secret management, dependency scanning, and software supply chain integrity.
What you will need Leadership & Management
  • Proven track record leading and managing engineering teams of 4+ people, including hiring, performance management, and career development across multiple levels.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence technical direction and build alignment across engineering, product, and business leaders.
  • Experience building and scaling teams in fast-moving, high-stakes environments (media, broadcast, live events, or adjacent industries a plus).
  • Demonstrated ability to execute on a technical vision and managing the day-to-day realities of team delivery.
AI & Automation
  • Hands-on experience designing, building, or deploying systems with the use of AI agents, LLM-powered automation, or spec-driven workflow architectures.
  • Deep familiarity with the modern AI tooling ecosystem - including LLM APIs (Anthropic, OpenAI), agent frameworks, and AI-assisted developer tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex).
  • A builder's mindset balanced with mature security judgment - knows where AI can and cannot be trusted in production workflows, understands the evolving attack surface it introduces, and is comfortable escalating to information security partners.
  • Experience integrating AI capabilities into media technology contexts (MAM, transcoding, broadcast automation, streaming pipelines, or metadata enrichment) is a significant plus.
Technical Depth
  • Hands-on proficiency with AI development tooling and frameworks - including LLM APIs (Anthropic, OpenAI) and AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot).
  • Deep, hands-on expertise designing, securing, building, and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Azure DevOps).
  • Extensive experience with AWS architecture and services (IAM, EC2, ECS, Lambda, S3, CodeBuild/Pipeline).
  • Hands-on proficiency building secure automation and tooling using JavaScript/TypeScript or equivalent languages.
  • Experience working with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and Linux environments.
  • Familiarity with media technology stacks: video streaming protocols (HLS, DASH), media asset management systems, broadcast infrastructure, or live event delivery platforms a plus.
