What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bridge Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bridge Manager, you need expertise in civil engineering principles, structural analysis, and project management, usually backed by a degree in civil engineering and relevant licensure. Familiarity with bridge design software (like AutoCAD or Bentley), inspection tools, and project management systems is typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help coordinate teams and address complex challenges. These abilities ensure the safety, integrity, and efficient operation of bridge infrastructure under your management.

What are the main challenges a Bridge Manager faces when coordinating maintenance and repair projects?

A Bridge Manager often encounters challenges such as balancing limited budgets with the need for timely repairs, coordinating with multiple stakeholders (including engineers, contractors, and government agencies), and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations. Scheduling repairs to minimize traffic disruptions while maintaining public safety is also a common difficulty. Effective communication and strong project management skills are essential to navigate these complexities and ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.

What is a Bridge Manager?

A Bridge Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the operation, maintenance, and safety of bridges. Their duties include coordinating inspections, managing repairs, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and sometimes supervising a team of maintenance workers. Bridge Managers work closely with engineers, local authorities, and contractors to ensure that bridges remain safe for public use and are maintained according to governmental standards. They may also be involved in budgeting, reporting, and emergency response planning related to bridge infrastructure.

Job description

Weston & Sampson is seeking a Senior Transportation Bridge Design Manager to lead bridge design and project delivery efforts for key transportation infrastructure projects across Southeast.

This senior leadership position offers the opportunity to manage complex DOT and local government bridge projects - including widening, intersection improvements, and corridor upgrades - while guiding a talented team of engineers and designers.

What you'll do:

  • Manage and lead bridge design projects from concept through construction.
  • Oversee technical design teams, ensuring compliance with AASHTO, DOT, and local standards.
  • Serve as the primary client liaison for project delivery, quality, and performance.
  • Review structural calculations, plans, and specifications.

  • Support proposal development and business growth through technical leadership.

What you'll bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in South Carolina (or ability to become registered) is commonly required or strongly preferred.
  • 10-15 years of progressive structural/bridge engineering design experience, including leadership of large-scale DOT or other county/municipal transportation projects.
  • Experience in steel, concrete, and prestressed concrete bridge design, inspection, and load rating.
  • Solid knowledge of and proficiency in applying the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation to transportation structures.
  • Proficiency in design and analysis software such as AASHTOWare (BrR/D), Midas Civil, STAAD, LEAP Concrete and Steel, Microstation, OpenBridge, AutoCAD, Civil 3D
  • NBIS certification is a plus.
  • Experience working with state DOT standards - for South Carolina this means familiarity with SCDOT's design criteria, submittal process, right-of-way/utility coordination (though this is more of a plus).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead design efforts, oversee preparation of plans, specifications, cost estimates, and deliverables.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, schedules, and multidisciplinary teams.
