What is a brewery?

Brewery jobs focus on producing, bottling, marketing, storing, and transporting beer. Your job duties as a brewmaster involve working to produce beers. Some breweries may call this position a head brewer. You work with assistant brewers to choose ingredients and control the fermentation process. As a cellar technician, you maintain brewing and storage equipment. Larger breweries may also have laborers who bottle the beers and quality control workers that taste the products. If you work in marketing or sales, your responsibilities revolve around finding retail and wholesale outlets for the brewery’s beer. If the brewery serves beer onsite, they may employ taproom servers as well. Your duties may change depending on whether you work for a large beer company or a craft brewery.

What does a brewery do?

A brewery is a facility dedicated to producing beer through the brewing process, which involves fermenting grains, usually barley, with water, hops, and yeast. Breweries can range from small craft operations to large industrial plants, and they often handle everything from recipe development and ingredient selection to brewing, fermenting, packaging, and sometimes distribution. Many breweries also have taprooms or pubs where customers can sample and purchase their beers directly. In addition to traditional beer, some breweries may produce other fermented beverages such as cider or kombucha.

What are the typical daily responsibilities for someone working in a brewery?

Daily responsibilities in a brewery often include monitoring the brewing process, cleaning and sanitizing equipment, measuring ingredients, recording batch data, and ensuring quality control at each stage. Team members may also assist with packaging, labeling, and shipping finished products. Collaboration is key, as brewery staff regularly coordinate with quality assurance, logistics, and sales teams to ensure smooth production and distribution. The role can be physically demanding and requires attention to detail, but it offers hands-on experience in a dynamic, team-oriented environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a brewery worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Brewery Worker, you need knowledge of brewing processes, attention to detail, and often a background in food science or a related field. Familiarity with brewing equipment, sanitation protocols, and inventory management systems is typically required, and certifications like Cicerone or brewing courses can be beneficial. Strong teamwork, problem-solving ability, and a commitment to safety and cleanliness help individuals excel in this environment. These skills ensure consistent product quality, operational efficiency, and adherence to safety and industry standards.

Understanding this distinction helps clarify job roles and career paths within the brewing industry.

Does working at a brewery pay well?

Salaries for brewery workers vary based on role, experience, and location. Entry-level positions such as bartenders or production assistants typically earn minimum wage or slightly above, while skilled roles like brewers or managers can earn higher salaries, often supplemented by benefits. Overall, brewery jobs tend to offer moderate pay compared to other industries, with potential for advancement and skill development.

How can you get hired at a brewery?

To get hired at a brewery, applicants should have a strong interest in brewing and related skills, such as knowledge of fermentation processes or customer service experience. Many positions require a high school diploma or equivalent, and some roles may benefit from certifications like the Certified Cicerone or relevant food safety training. Applying through the brewery’s website, job boards, or in person, and demonstrating enthusiasm and relevant skills, can improve chances of employment.
