Work Hours: 6PM-6AM 12-hour shifts: 7 days in a two week period, including alternating weekends.
Work Setting: In-person
Location: Azusa or Redlands, CA
Travel: Willingness to travel as needed to donor hospitals and transplant centers.
Summary of Functions:
The Surgical Recovery Coordinator (SRC) plays a critical role in facilitating organ recovery and transplantation by overseeing all aspects of operating room (OR) coordination and recovery processes. This dynamic role requires expertise in managing surgical teams, coordinating with medical professionals, and ensuring the successful recovery and preservation of organs from brain-dead (BD) and donation after circulatory death (DCD) donors.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Essential Job Functions:
Organ Recovery Coordination
  1. Performs OR set up and coordination which includes the room set up with appropriate medical equipment, sterile medical supplies, and instrumentation for the recovery of Organs such as kidneys, liver, lungs, pancreas, heart, intestines, vessels, tissue typing material.
  2. Performs and ensures all Organ, Specimens, Vessels, and Blood tubes are labeled AND packaged accurately.
  3. Performs organ perfusion.
  4. Assists transplant teams with recovery efforts.
  5. Assists in the aseptic surgical recovery of organs as requested by recovery surgeon(s).
  6. Performs aseptic surgical recovery of organs for research.
  7. Verifies ABO and serology results.
  8. Verifies death pronouncement notes 1 and 2 for Brain Dead (BD) donors.
  9. Verifies death pronouncement notes for DCD (Donation Cardiac Death) donors.
  10. Completes Organ Recovery documentation and documents the recovery process in digitalDonor (Electronic Medical Records system).
  11. Ensures all organs are labeled and packaged accurately per OneLegacy and OPTN policy.
  12. Accurately documents all organ laterally in digitalDonor utilize the OneLegacy EMR data system.
  13. Provides education to both external and internal partners on both brain death and DCD organ recoveries.
Research Organ Allocation
Surgical Recovery Coordinator Resource
  1. Organ Recovery Services- SRC Resource/Logistics/Case Set-up
  2. Activates surgical recovery coordinator(s) and OR scrub for organ OR recoveries.
  1. Participates in Case Huddles
  2. Participates in Pre-Recovery Time Out for organ OR recoveries.
  3. Sets up couriers for supplies and equipment.
  4. Reviews all Pre/ Post organ OR documentation.
  5. Performs other logistical tasks as instructed by management for the purposes of facilitating tissue donation.
  6. Is the subject matter expert for staff you utilize when complex issues arise.

Organ Pathology
  1. Receives specimens and carefully checks paperwork for accuracy and completeness, including appropriate documentation of medical necessity. Contact ordering source if any information is incomplete.
  2. Monitors specimen identification using the laboratory’s specimen identification policies. Resolves problems and completes documentation as required.
  3. Processes test requests with accompanying specimens and enters orders as required. Uses established policies and procedures for specimen acceptability and troubleshoots or clarifies questions regarding specimen integrity.
  4. Prepares frozen section in accordance with Onelegacy Policy and facilitates specimen interpretation with third party organization.
  5. Processes specimen by placing on instrument and placing in appropriate storage area.
  6. Prepares and returns blood components and tissues following patient and product identification procedures.
  7. Troubleshoots laboratory’s defined equipment and document system error codes.
  8. Responds to telephone requests regarding add on tests, patient results, availability of products, and department procedures.
  9. Practices universal safety precautions according to company Policy and Procedures at all times (e.g. use of gloves, lab coat, and other Personal Protective Equipment).
  10. Plans and coordinates workflow to meet OneLegacy requirements and provides for satisfactory turnaround time of tests.
  11. Uses computers to access specimens, report results, and collects quality assurance data using the Anatomic Pathology information system.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Surgical Technologist Support (OR Scrub)
  1. Aseptically sets up the OR (Operating Room or surgical recovery room) for the Organ Recovery and breaks down the OR Post-Recovery.
  2. Performs surgical prep and drape of the donor.
  3. Manages instrumentation during the case and completes a pre and post case instrument count.
  4. Hands off instruments and supplies to surgeon(s) during the organ recovery.
  5. Verifies the Authorization and organs to be recovered.
  6. Assists the surgeon(s) as needed or directed.
  7. Assembles and ensures all pertinent documents remain in the donor chart following completion of the recovery.
  8. Documents the recovery process in digitalDonor (Electronic Medical Records system).
Donor Receiving and Releasing
  1. Assists with logistics and coordination of donor transportation to OneLegacy Recovery facilities for recovery.
  2. Facilitates receiving and releasing of donors in OneLegacy Transplant Recovery Centers from partners such as but not limited to transport companies, coroner offices, and funeral homes.
Facility Maintenance and Cleaning and Materials Management
  1. Performs facility cleaning and maintenance such as but not limited to cleaning, disinfecting, mopping, and taking out trash in the Supply Depot, Recovery OR, Morgue, tissue shipping/lab room, and other areas as needed.
  2. Ensures inventory of organ OR supplies are maintained appropriately to support day-to-day operations.
  3. Ensures inventory of administrative supplies are maintained appropriately to support day-to-day operations.
  4. Removes trash from exterior waste receptacles and maintain the cleanliness of the office space.
  5. Assists Central Supply department with instrument cleaning, decontamination, sterilization and inventory management as needed.

Job Qualifications and Requirements:
Education: Required to have at least one of the following: completion of an EMT program, completion of a Surgical Technologist program, current or previous licensure as a paramedic, previous experience in tissue or organ recoveries, experience in an allied health field such as (embalming, physiology, anatomy, mortuary sciences, surgical, EMS, EMT, ER Technologist, paramedic, pathology, nursing), Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university is preferred.
Experience: 1 plus years of experience in organ recovery or transplantation is highly preferred.
Salary Range: $77,350 to $86,450
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, OneLegacy considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
