Bookkeeping Independent information

What does a bookkeeping independent do?

A bookkeeping independent, often called an independent bookkeeper, is a self-employed professional who manages financial records for businesses or individuals. Their main tasks include recording transactions, reconciling accounts, preparing financial statements, and ensuring that all financial data is accurate and up to date. Unlike in-house bookkeepers, they typically work on a contract or freelance basis and may serve multiple clients at once. Independent bookkeepers help businesses stay organized and compliant with financial regulations, often working remotely or on a flexible schedule.

What are some typical challenges faced by independent bookkeepers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Independent bookkeepers often face challenges such as managing multiple clients with varying needs, staying updated on changing tax laws, and maintaining accurate records under tight deadlines. To manage these effectively, it’s important to establish clear communication channels with clients, use reliable accounting software to streamline processes, and regularly invest time in professional development. Many independent bookkeepers also find success by setting structured workflows and maintaining a disciplined schedule to balance workload and prevent errors.

Job description

This is a remote position.

About the Firm

Our client is a well-established wealth management firm with a robust in-house tax practice, built through the acquisition of a large CPA firm and supported by its sister company. The firm is seeking an experienced Bookkeeper to join their professional team.

This position is ideal for a hands-on accounting professional who thrives in a production-focused environment and enjoys managing multiple client engagements with precision and autonomy.

About the Role

The Bookkeeper plays a critical role in managing the firm’s monthly client accounting engagements from start to finish. The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, comfortable managing multiple deadlines, and confident working within QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online at a power-user level.

This role is also a proven growth path into our Staff Accountant position for bookkeepers who want to expand into fuller-cycle accounting and, eventually, tax-adjacent work.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a portfolio of monthly bookkeeping clients (up to 15–20 at capacity over time).

• Take each client engagement from start to finish on a monthly basis.

• Perform full-cycle bookkeeping, including transaction coding, bank and credit card reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance.

• Prepare and finalize monthly financial statements.

• Review work and ensure accuracy of account classifications and reporting.

• Communicate with clients to gather necessary documentation and clarify transactions (initially limited client-facing responsibility, with opportunity to grow into a more client-facing role over time).

• Maintain organized and accurate financial records in compliance with firm standards and accounting best practices.

• Utilize QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online extensively as a power user.

Requirements

• 5+ years of bookkeeping experience, preferably within a public accounting environment (candidates with 8–10+ years are encouraged to apply).

• Strong understanding of full-cycle bookkeeping, account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.

• Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online required.

• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple client deadlines.

• Ability to step into the role with minimal training and operate independently — while still receiving mentorship and support from the team.

• Located in Eastern or Central time zone.

Benefits

• Compensation: Competitive compensation commensurate with experience.

• Work arrangement: Remote or hybrid, depending on proximity to a firm office.

• Paid Time Off: Flexible/unlimited PTO.

• Retirement: 401(k) with company match.

• Health coverage: Medical, dental, and vision insurance.

• Professional development: CPE / professional development budget.

• Growth path: A clear track toward a Staff Accountant role for candidates who want to grow their scope.

• Culture: A collaborative, team-oriented environment that values autonomy, precision, and professional growth.
