Job description

SUMMARY:
Artisan and Black Dog & Leventhal, divisions of Workman within Hachette Book Group, are seeking an Editorial Assistant who is passionate and knowledgeable about illustrated book publishing. This is an entry level role, supporting senior editorial staff from both imprints. Artisan and Black Dog & Leventhal publish illustrated books to inspire and instruct, produced with great intention and quality, specializing in design, pop culture, cooking, and expanding the boundaries of general nonfiction.
Please note: this role will be based in our New York Office on a hybrid model.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist in manuscript preparation, art log creation and management, and other book-related tasks for projects acquired and assigned by the senior editorial staff
  • Perform administrative duties, including mailings, processing book orders, scheduling, submitting invoices, tracking payment requests, filing expense reports and reimbursements, andmaintaining book archives.
  • Enter title data into proprietary database systems and actively maintain data throughout publishing process.
  • Draft fact sheets that will be used to explain books to the sales and marketing departments. Take ownership and keep careful track of project-specific and seasonal deadlines.
  • Work closely with department members to create sales presentations in Powerpoint for recurring meetings and solicit various assets used for seasonal sell-in.
  • Interact professionally and efficiently with authors and their literary agents, as well as internal departments, including design, publicity, marketing, production, and sales.
  • Attend, prepare materials, and take/distribute minutes for editorial meetings, and marketing and sales meetings as required.
  • Attend and participate in editorial and production meetings, evaluating marketplace trends, and researching and developing book ideas
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Be highly organized, with the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively while also ensuring accuracy of work through attention to detail
  • Demonstrate good follow up and follow through. Be self-directed and able to work independently, as well as be able to work effectively and collaboratively with all members on a small team.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Think holistically about a task as it pertains to the publishing process
  • Be interested in learning and applying details of the publishing process to tasks
  • Be comfortable using email, calendar management, and file management tools
  • Possess solid computer skills, including proficiency in Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Dropbox, and similar tools
  • Familiar with Adobe Suite, including Photoshop and InDesign
  • Have some publishing experience (while not required, this is a plus)

The compensation for this position is $50,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location - talk with your recruiter to learn more.
