What is a BOM Management?

A BOM (Bill of Materials) Management job involves overseeing the creation, organization, and maintenance of BOMs, which list the components and materials required to manufacture a product. This role ensures BOM accuracy, version control, and alignment with engineering changes. Professionals in BOM Management collaborate with design, engineering, procurement, and manufacturing teams to optimize production efficiency and cost-effectiveness. They also use PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) or ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems to track and update BOM data.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in BOM Management, and why are they important?

To thrive in BOM Management (Bill of Materials Management), you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of manufacturing processes and supply chain logistics, often supported by a relevant degree in engineering, supply chain management, or a related field. Familiarity with ERP systems such as SAP or Oracle, proficiency in spreadsheets, and experience with product lifecycle management (PLM) tools are typically required. Excellent organizational abilities, communication skills, and cross-functional collaboration help individuals excel in coordinating with engineering, procurement, and production teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate materials planning, minimizing production delays, and maintaining data integrity throughout the product lifecycle.

What are some common challenges faced in BOM Management roles, and how are they addressed?

Professionals in BOM Management frequently face the challenge of maintaining accurate and up-to-date material records amidst frequent design changes and complex product structures. Communication gaps between engineering, procurement, and manufacturing teams can also lead to inconsistencies or errors in the Bill of Materials. To address these challenges, BOM Managers rely on robust version control practices, regular cross-departmental meetings, and advanced ERP or PLM systems for real-time data updates. Proactive documentation and continuous process improvements also play a key role in streamlining workflows and reducing errors in BOM data management.

What skills are needed for bom management?

Bom management requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and proficiency with enterprise resource planning (ERP) software. Knowledge of manufacturing processes, inventory control, and effective communication are also essential for managing bill of materials efficiently.

Our first products are heavily focused on inference. Backed by hundreds of millions from top-tier investors and staffed by leading engineers, Etched is redefining the infrastructure layer for the fastest growing industry in history.
Job Summary
We're looking for a Platform PLM BOM Analyst to improve the quality, consistency, and visibility of product data across our PLM ecosystem and cross-functional business processes.
This role focuses on BOM analysis, reporting, validation, and reconciliation across Teamcenter, Contract Manufacturer data, procurement information, and As-Built records. You'll identify product data discrepancies, improve BOM accuracy, and ensure Engineering-approved configurations are consistently reflected throughout the product lifecycle.

We're looking for someone who is analytical, detail-oriented, and comfortable working across Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Finance, and Contract Manufacturers. You enjoy solving complex data challenges, communicating insights clearly, and helping transform those insights into practical, scalable business solutions.
Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze and validate BOMs for accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies across Engineering, Contract Manufacturer, procurement, and As-Built BOMs.
  • Develop and maintain BOM reports, dashboards, Delta BOMs, and data quality metrics.
  • Support Engineering Change analysis, implementation tracking, and product data validation.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to improve product data quality and manufacturing readiness.
  • Support Teamcenter reporting, testing, and validation of new PLM capabilities.

  • Identify opportunities and develop business solutions to improve BOM management, reporting, and product data governance.

You may be a good fit if you have (Must-have qualifications)
  • 5-8 years of experience supporting product data, Bills of Materials (BOMs), Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), manufacturing engineering, or configuration management within a hardware product development environment.
  • Experience working with Bills of Materials, product structures, or manufacturing product data.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail and data accuracy.
  • Experience creating reports, dashboards, or data comparisons.
  • Ability to investigate discrepancies across multiple systems and data sources.
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities.

Strong candidates may also have experience with (Nice-to-have qualifications)

How we're different
Etched believes in the Bitter Lesson. We are the first inference-focused frontier AI system, betting early on transformer and transformer-like architectures and on increasing model sizes. Our addressable market is the entirety of inference, unlike many of our competitors.
We are a fully in-person team in San Jose (Santana Row), and greatly value engineering skills. We do not have boundaries between engineering and research, and we expect all of our technical staff to contribute to both and work across disciplines as needed.
