What is a boiler tube welder?

A Boiler Tube Welder is a skilled tradesperson who specializes in welding and repairing boiler tubes used in industrial and power plant boilers. They work with high-pressure piping systems, using various welding techniques such as TIG, MIG, and stick welding to ensure secure and durable joints. This job requires knowledge of metallurgy, blueprint reading, and safety protocols to handle extreme temperatures and pressures. Boiler Tube Welders often work in confined spaces and must meet strict industry standards for quality and precision.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a boiler tube welder?

To excel as a Boiler Tube Welder, you need strong welding abilities, knowledge of boiler systems, and a high school diploma or equivalent, often supplemented by formal welding certifications such as AWS or ASME. Responsibilities
Welding (~30% of time)
  • Perform STIC and TIG welding pipe, fittings, flanges, and pressure vessel components following approved welding code procedures.
  • Execute fixed-position 6G pipe welds to code; maintain weld quality and documentation standards required for ASME pressure vessel work.
  • Fabricate and weld custom brackets, supports, and structural components as required during installation and repair projects.
  • Use torch proficiently for cutting, heating, and fitting preparation
Heat exchangers & pressure vessels
  • Install, replace, and maintain heat exchangers; perform tube rolling, bundle removal and re-installation, and shell inspection.
  • Perform full pressure vessel repairs including shell patch welding, nozzle replacement, refractory removal and replacement, and re-certification support.

Preventive maintenance
  • Open, inspect, and close boilers and pressure vessels per PM schedule; document findings and condition of internal components with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Re-gasket flanges, manholes, handholes, and access covers using correct gasket materials and torque specifications.

  • Perform general maintenance tasks including lubrication, hardware replacement, and minor repairs to keep equipment in reliable operating condition.

Mechanical work & piping
  • Install, repair, and replace piping systems; perform pipe threading, fitting, and layout from blueprints and drawings.
  • Install, align, and service pumps and associated mechanical equipment; perform packing, seal, and coupling replacements.
  • Size pipe, valves, and system components to meet design specifications.

  • Complete work orders, daily activity reports, and as-built documentation accurately and on time.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Work overtime and weekends as necessary; respond to emergency service calls.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Service Manager.
