Job description

Service Technician III

Position Overview

As a Service Technician III, you'll operate as a senior/journeyman-level expert, independently handling complex commercial HVAC service calls, advanced diagnostics, repairs, maintenance, and system startups across a wide range of equipment in buildings, hospitals, schools, industrial facilities, and more. Lead service efforts on challenging jobs, mentor junior technicians, and deliver high-reliability solutions that ensure code compliance, energy efficiency, and outstanding customer satisfaction. Our people-first culture empowers your mastery with specialized training, certifications, leadership opportunities, and the fulfillment of keeping critical commercial systems running safely and sustainably nationwide.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Independently diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain complex commercial HVAC systems, including rooftop units, split systems, chillers, boilers, VAV boxes, air handlers, central plants, controls/DDC, large-tonnage equipment, and both wet-side (hydronic) and dry-side (air-side) applications.
  • Perform advanced repairs such as major component replacements (compressors, evaporators, condensers, controls, valves, pumps), refrigerant recovery/recharge/handling, system balancing, startup/commissioning, and retrofits/upgrades.
  • Conduct thorough preventive maintenance, performance testing, energy-efficiency assessments, leak detection, and system optimization to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Lead full service calls from dispatch to completion: assess on-site issues, communicate clearly with customers on findings/recommendations/solutions, coordinate parts and materials, execute work, and follow up for satisfaction.
  • Ensure all work complies with codes, regulations, manufacturer specifications, EPA requirements, and Modigent safety/quality standards.
  • Document service activities in detail (work orders, reports, photos, as-builts, recommendations) and maintain accurate records for billing, warranty, and continuous improvement.
  • Mentor and guide Service Technician I and II team members by demonstrating techniques, sharing best practices, supporting on-the-job learning, and promoting safety and quality standards.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Yes – Provides coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance to junior Service Technicians (Levels I and II); may lead small service teams or coordinate with subcontractors on complex calls, ensuring alignment with safety, quality, and customer expectations.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Experience: 5+ years of progressive hands-on commercial HVAC service, repair, and maintenance experience; proven journeyman-level proficiency in diagnosing and resolving advanced system issues independently.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; trade school, apprenticeship completion, or equivalent preferred.
  • Certifications: EPA Section 608 certification (Universal strongly preferred); NATE certification, manufacturer-specific training, OSHA 10/30-hour, or other relevant credentials a plus.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding/stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use diagnostic tools/equipment for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Primarily field-based in commercial/industrial settings (indoor/outdoor, varying weather, rooftops, mechanical rooms); exposure to noise, dust, heights, refrigerants, electrical hazards, and extreme temperatures; must strictly adhere to OSHA regulations, EPA protocols, conduct hazard identification, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, harnesses, and steel-toed boots at all times—safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position. Frequent regional travel within assigned market, on-call rotations, and flexible hours (including evenings/weekends) may be required as business needs dictate.

Required Skills

  • Advanced diagnostic/troubleshooting across commercial HVAC equipment (RTUs, chillers, boilers, controls/DDC, hydronic/air systems).
  • Refrigerant handling/recovery/recharge (EPA-compliant), component replacement, system balancing, startup/commissioning.
  • Proficiency with gauges, recovery machines, multimeters, combustion analyzers, and specialized HVAC test equipment.
  • Excellent customer service, communication (verbal/written), problem-solving, and mentoring skills.
  • Safety leadership, documentation/reporting, multitasking, and independent decision-making in high-pressure situations.
