What is a boarding kennel?

Boarding kennels are facilities where pet owners can temporarily leave their dogs, cats, or other small animals while they are away. These establishments provide care, feeding, exercise, and sometimes grooming or medical attention for the animals during their stay. Boarding kennels are staffed by trained professionals who ensure that pets are safe, comfortable, and well-cared for. Many kennels also offer specialized services, such as playtime, socialization, and updates for pet owners. Choosing a reputable boarding kennel can give pet owners peace of mind while they travel.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a boarding kennel attendant?

To thrive as a Boarding Kennel Attendant, you need experience in animal care, basic pet first aid knowledge, and often a high school diploma. Familiarity with kennel management software and animal handling equipment is typically required. Strong organizational skills, patience, and clear communication help attendants manage animal needs and interact with pet owners. These skills ensure the safety, health, and well-being of animals while maintaining customer trust and efficient kennel operations.

What are some typical challenges faced by staff working in a boarding kennel, and how can they be managed?

Staff working in a boarding kennel often face challenges such as managing animals with different temperaments, handling high noise levels, and maintaining strict cleanliness standards. Effective communication with both pet owners and team members is crucial for ensuring each animal's specific needs are met. Time management and adaptability are also important, as the pace can vary with the number of animals in care. To manage these challenges, many kennels provide ongoing training in animal behavior, safety protocols, and stress-reduction techniques for both staff and pets.

What is the difference between Boarding Kennel vs Pet Groomer?

AspectBoarding KennelPet Groomer
Required CredentialsBasic animal care knowledge, sometimes certificationsGrooming certifications or courses often preferred
Work EnvironmentAnimal boarding facilities, kennels, pet hotelsGrooming salons, pet spas, mobile grooming units
Employer & Industry UsagePet care facilities, kennels, pet hotelsGrooming salons, pet stores, mobile grooming services

While both roles involve caring for animals, a Boarding Kennel primarily focuses on providing overnight care and supervision for pets, ensuring their safety and well-being during their stay. A Pet Groomer specializes in grooming, bathing, and styling pets' fur and nails. Both roles require animal handling skills, but their work environments and daily tasks differ significantly.

How to get a job in a boarding kennel?

To get a job in a boarding kennel, applicants should have a genuine interest in animals, good communication skills, and the ability to handle physically demanding tasks. Relevant experience with pet care or volunteering can improve chances, and some positions may require basic certifications in pet first aid or animal handling. Applying directly to kennels, submitting a resume, and demonstrating reliability are common steps in the hiring process.

Is boarding kennel work a good career?

Boarding kennel work involves caring for animals in a facility, requiring skills in animal handling, cleanliness, and customer service. It can offer steady employment and opportunities to gain experience in pet care, but typically offers moderate pay and may involve physical labor and irregular hours.

Job description

Build Your Career. Care for Pets. Be Part of the Team.

Ranch Animal Hospital is looking for a dependable, compassionate, and hardworking Kennel Technician to join our growing team in Bradenton, Florida.
If you love working with animals and want to be part of a veterinary hospital where your work directly impacts the comfort and care of every patient, this could be the opportunity for you.
Whether your background is in kennel care, boarding, animal care, dog daycare, veterinary assisting, or pet care, we want to meet you.
At Ranch Animal Hospital, our Kennel Technicians are an important part of the veterinary team. You'll help care for hospitalized and boarding pets, maintain a clean and welcoming hospital, and support the doctors, veterinary technicians, and client service team throughout the day.
You won't just care for pets here. You'll become part of a team that cares about them, and each other.

Schedule and Compensation

$16.50-$18.00 per hour
, based on experience
Consistent Full-Time Schedule:
  •  Tuesday
  •  Thursday
  •  Friday
  •  Saturday
A predictable schedule gives you the stability to build relationships with your teammates, patients, and clients while becoming an integral part of our hospital.
As a Kennel Technician, you will help ensure our patients receive exceptional care while maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.

Patient and Boarding Care
  •  Feed, walk, exercise, and monitor boarding and hospitalized pets
  •  Provide compassionate daily care for dogs and cats
  •  Administer medications as directed by the veterinary team
  •  Monitor patient behavior, appetite, comfort, and overall condition
  •  Communicate concerns promptly to the veterinary team
  •  Provide gentle, patient-focused handling throughout each pet's stay
Hospital Support
  •  Clean and disinfect kennels, cages, runs, treatment areas, and equipment
  •  Maintain a clean, safe, and organized hospital environment
  •  Assist with laundry, stocking, and daily hospital tasks
  •  Help maintain a comfortable and welcoming environment for patients and their families
Be Part of the Team
  •  Support veterinarians and veterinary technicians with patient care and animal handling
  •  Assist with patient restraint when appropriate
  •  Work closely with the client service team and other hospital departments
  •  Help keep patient care and daily hospital operations running smoothly
  •  Step in where needed and contribute to a positive team environment
We're looking for someone who is dependable, hardworking, compassionate, and ready to be part of a team.

You should have:
  • 1+ year of experience in animal care, boarding, kennel operations, veterinary medicine, or a related field preferred
  •  Comfort handling dogs and cats of different sizes, breeds, and temperaments
  •  A strong work ethic and attention to detail
  •  The ability to work efficiently in a busy veterinary environment
  •  A positive, team-oriented attitude
  •  Reliable attendance and punctuality
  •  A genuine passion for caring for animals
Veterinary experience is helpful, but we're equally interested in people who bring the right attitude, work ethic, and desire to learn.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach throughout the workday
  • Comfortable working around animal dander, cleaning products, veterinary chemicals, and varying noise levels
  • Ability to safely handle and restrain animals when necessary
We're building a team-not simply filling positions.
As a Kennel Technician, you'll work alongside veterinary professionals who understand that excellent patient care starts with the people providing it. You'll gain hands-on experience in a veterinary hospital while learning how patient care, nursing, boarding, and hospital operations come together.
For team members who want to grow, this can be a starting point for a long-term career in veterinary medicine.
Opportunities may include growth into roles such as:
  • Veterinary Assistant
  • Veterinary Technician
  • Client Service Representative
  • Leadership and Hospital Support
We want people who are excited to learn, contribute, and grow with us.
