Board Intern information

What is a board intern?

Board Interns are individuals, often students or early-career professionals, who participate in a company's or nonprofit organization's board of directors in a non-voting, learning capacity. Their primary role is to observe board meetings, understand governance practices, and gain insight into organizational leadership and decision-making processes. Board Internships are designed to provide practical experience, mentorship, and networking opportunities to prepare participants for future board service or leadership roles. While they do not have formal voting power, board interns may be asked to contribute ideas or assist with specific projects, depending on the organization's policies.

What are the typical responsibilities of a board intern and how do they support the board’s work?

As a Board Intern, you’ll typically assist with preparing board meeting materials, conducting research on strategic topics, and taking detailed meeting notes. You may also help organize board events, communicate with stakeholders, and support special projects under the guidance of board members or the board secretary. This role provides valuable exposure to governance processes and allows you to collaborate with senior leaders, offering a unique learning experience in organizational decision-making. Being proactive, organized, and maintaining confidentiality are key to succeeding in this position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a board intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Board Intern, you need a solid understanding of governance principles, organizational strategy, and strong analytical skills, often supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with board management software, meeting protocols, and reporting tools is typically required. Exceptional communication, discretion, and a willingness to learn are crucial soft skills for interacting with senior leaders and handling sensitive information. These skills and qualities are important because they enable you to contribute meaningfully, support board operations, and develop professional competencies for future leadership roles.
