These ranges reflect what BNSF Railway reasonably expects to pay for this position, based on the role's level, scope, and responsibilities. Final compensation and position level will be determined by factors such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. In addition to base pay and bonus eligibility, BNSF offers a comprehensive benefits package.

The BNSF Railway Law and Claims Department provides expert in-house counsel and collaborates with outside counsel to ensure the railroad operates safely and meets all legal and contractual obligations. Our licensed attorneys and legal professionals are dedicated to upholding the highest legal compliance standards. Additionally, our specialized Claims team promotes safety, investigates incidents, and resolves them ethically.

This is a full-time position located in Fort Worth, TX.  For certain positions, including this one, employees can work one day per week remotely.  Our leaders also foster a culture where work life balance, which requires flexibility for when life happens, is important and respected.

Travel is minimal, less than 10%

Key responsibilities may include: 

Supports internal clients on transactions with BNSF's suppliers and other counterparties.  This includes reviewing, drafting and negotiating a variety of agreements touching all aspects of BNSF's operations, including high-value agreements with BNSF's critical partners regarding operational, commercial, real estate, and construction issues.  

Counsels various BNSF departments on issues related to those agreements, including helping to manage disputes that occasionally arise and are resolved through litigation or arbitration.  

Assists with BNSF's contract management system, working as part of a team of lawyers and paralegals managing that function for BNSF.  

Daily work is conducted in an indoor office environment.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Able to work now and in the future without BNSF's assistance (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).

  • J.D. Degree

  • Current law license (Texas preferred, but not mandatory) 

  • 2+ years of law practice

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • At least 2 years of relevant work experience as a practicing lawyer (in-house, law firm or government) handling complex contract negotiations and transactions and/or dispute resolution (litigation/arbitration) 

  • Ability to handle complex and challenging assignments with extremely short turnaround deadlines

  • Strong negotiation skills and ability to build consensus and communicate compelling legal/business justification for position

  • Excellent legal research, verbal and written communication skills and ability to handle complex and challenging assignments with extremely short turnaround deadlines

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other web-based legal research tools

  • Experience in the transportation or manufacturing industry

  • Experience in drafting and negotiating technology and other commercial agreements involving intellectual property, artificial intelligence, and data privacy issues

  • Excellent legal research, verbal and written communication skills and ability to handle complex and challenging assignments with extremely short turnaround deadlines
